About this deal

The treatment is highly effective in keeping the structure strong, but will need topping up over time to keep the wood in optimum condition. I found (and more importantly so did one of my colonies) the space on a single standard not enough for both the early year population explosion and storing food for over wintering. I feel my bees over-winter better on a single brood and with OMFs, they have more space to retreat from any severe weather conditions than if a single standard brood only. Once they have started drawing comb, put the queen on her brood frame in the top box and continue to feed for, say, another week; her presence will encourage the bees to do more upstairs. A tip would be to feed to help them draw out the foundation with a rapid feeder, miller feeder, contact feeder, frame feeder, what ever you like.

These bees are on 14x12 frames which are suitable for a standard 14x12 brood box or WBC 14x12 brood box. The positives of double brood for me are ease of splitting (for whatever reason), rarely having to feed, all the brood parts are identical and usually I can do a comb change once the bees are properly active by removing the bottom box (which is rarely in use at that point) and putting a fresh box of foundation on top, then repeating the process for the next season. The Shed can be installed (down to the discretion of the main fitter) however any warranty included with the product will become void. The complete brood body comes with 11 Hoffman self spacing frames, premier wired foundation, dummy board, metal runners, nails and instructions. This inspired us to develop a new higher density polystyrene nuc box that has more than 1 basic purpose. Frames for illustration purposes only and are not included, please note these boxes are not supplied with bees. We have also reduced the issue of frames being propolised down by incorporating a frame runner, whilst maintaining sufficient top bee space reducing the risk of crushing bees. It gives you oodles more options, not least being able to move frames around between boxes to manage the colony size. I inspect the uppermost box for swarming weekly, because they do the queen cells in top most brood box if they do them.

The colony will re-orientate to the new entrance and will concentrate their efforts in the 14 x 12 box. The cladding on this shed is Pressure Treated (Tanalised) 25mm (planed to to a 20mm finish) specially designed rebated shiplap. At BS Honey Bees Ltd, we're not just a supplier; we're your dedicated partner in beekeeping, offering the pinnacle of bee quality and service. and then when the queen is in there and laying and a good percentage of the frames are drawn out and have brood in swap the boxes round so the national brood is on top and stick a queen excluder in between. I wouldn't put the national brood over the 14x12 and QE though as there is a good chance they will then use it as a super and start filling it with nectar, which is ok if you want to use it as a super.
