The second part of its botanical name – avium – refers to birds which play a role in the tree’s propagation by eating the cherries and dispersing the seed. Perfect if you’re a classic rum and coke drinker because let me tell you, cherry rum and coke is not to be underestimated. The foliage is the main food plant for caterpillars of many species of moth, including the cherry fruit and cherry bark moths, the orchard ermine, brimstone and short-cloaked moth. We’ll be using some tiki fire in the next cocktail so I’d recommend picking some up and trying this out. We’ll also float more tiki fire on top of our cocktail so we can set the whole thing on fire then sprinkle over some cinnamon. The flavour and colour is far from subtle, but Old J Cherry’s rounded fruitiness also works brilliantly in a range of cocktails, like our very own Cherry Bake Punch, or simply mixed with cola.
