About this deal

I’m so torn because I love Greek mythology but I feel like this book just might be a bit too young for me, and this is coming from someone who loved The Percy Jackson series!

This is a really lovely novel that covers grief (at the loss of a close family member), how to get along with your family, first love, and most importantly, how to not lose your friends along the way. If people thought Twilight was based on a really domestic/passively-aggressive dysfunctional relationship than we should report Oh.The interaction of followers of these faiths with Christian fundamentalists and followers of other religions is the main concern of the story. I thought they were very sweet and a nice way to keep her mother's memory alive and also allow Helen to let out feelings she tried to bottle up. I teach a class on Greek mythology for 7th graders that includes modern novel versions of the myths, and "Oh My Gods" by Alexandra Sheppard breathes new life into the genre! Now she must attend the uber exclusive academy, where admission depends on pedigree, namely, ancestry from Zeus, Hera, and other Greek gods. Not only does Helen have to deal with normal teenage problems, annoying siblings, a new school, boys, and the dreaded spots, she also has to keep the secret that her family is really a bunch of gods.

Most often they zap pieces of paper to each other and change the writing so that they can communicate privately, without speaking. Her dad might look like a dorky academic but he’s actually Zeus, ruler of the gods, while her spiteful and self-absorbed sister is the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite. The following year, a strip entitled "Finale" was posted along with a note from the creator indicating that he had decided to cease creating the Oh My Gods! This Aphrodite is occasionally spiteful, but a long way from the grim Aphrodite who in Iliad 3 coerces Helen to pleasure Paris post-duel.

Well, let me recant, I skipped to the last page, read it, and thought, good, I'm glad I didn't waste any more time because it came out exactly right on the cheese-scale. We don't get to learn that much about the characters, so they are likable but I didn't really feel connected with ony of them. A problematic figure who represents a sort of mythical palimpsest, she carries a legacy as fought-over as any fallen Trojan or Greek warrior.

I thought the concept was brilliant—Greek gods having descendants, descendants having to work for their power, the high school clique scene (determined by which god is in your family. Helen tries to fit in with her family, but Aphrodite, who is trying to make it as a make up artist, seems to hate her. Her favourite food is curry goat, her afro is rarely cooperative, and she hated the summer drama course she took in Clerkenwell: ‘Everything, from my skin to my hair to what I had in my packed lunch, set me apart from the posh kids who went there.

This Helen takes a dim view of the beauty industry, she does her French homework on time, and is more Air Max than Alexander McQueen. It was the perfect time killer cute and fun, despite having little substance and not too long to get boring. However I really enjoyed Phoebe's passion for running and I liked the twist that revealed Pheobe's ancestry. He won't let her invite friends to the house which is declared a no mortal zone and is quick to take her phone away over the most minuscule things.

When she attends the Academy at her new home, she finds out it's not the most typical school out there. This was a classic coming of age tale, of a teenage girl having to find friendship and acceptance in a new area, but with a massive secret to sit on - Great entertainment! There were so many part of this book that had me giggling or gasping, but unfortunately, parts of this book fell pretty short for me.

Her mom couldn't wait to marry this stranger until after Phoebe completed her last year of high school?
