About this deal

Superficially it’s about families and inheritance but each family member is a microcosm of today’s society and the author poses questions about religion, identity, immigration, ethnicity and minorities.

Everyone else was climbing into their boxes, writing Keep Out on the outside and sealing themselves up inside. This is not unusual, as the Seltzers are Cannibal-Americans, a once proud and thriving ethnic group, but for Seventh, it raises some serious questions. Auslander has published a collection of short stories, Beware of God and a memoir, Foreskin's Lament: A Memoir. However, Mother for Dinner also has a deeper message about how the US melting pot works and how it doesn’t.They are however pretty inept, and need the assistance of the patriarch Unclish, who founded the Can-Am University (where nothing but Cannibal thought is taught, even though it never really opened), to perform the Victuals. The story centered on Seventh Seltzer, the (you guessed it) seventh kid of an apparently last Cannibal-American family living in Brooklyn. It is, I might even say, almost sweet; which after the grotesque nature of what the reader has had to swallow is almost glorious. This could be a portrait of any ethnic group that has been consumed by America, though, in this case, it’s unclear who is devouring whom.

The book runs on one long chapter with breaks, flashbacks, and background stories of Seventh in one long rhythm - this allows Auslander to properly set the stage for us, and I thoroughly enjoy every bits of the narration. Of practical concern, she’s six-foot-two and weighs over thirty stone – even divided up between Seventh and his eleven brothers, that's a lot of red meat.really interesting concept, i liked when they talked about the history of Can Am’s and how contradicting they all are.

if you are a chain breaker in YOUR family -- (hard knock truth) -- you just might be seen as a NOBODY! In 1914, Julius Seltzer left the paradisiacal “Old Country” with his sister Julia, who pretended to be his wife and traveled with him to Detroit to work for Henry Ford. Shalom Auslander's Mother for Dinner is an outrageously tasty comedy about identity and inheritance, the things we owe our families and the things we owe ourselves. Mudd is almost a dark-matter liberal in how much she hates everyone except Can-Ams, and her particular loathing of Gilligan’s Island and Jack Nicholson. The Twelve are legally bound to do this if they want to inherit, despite complaints of veganism, not knowing if she’s kosher and suchlike – but Seventh, surprisingly, wants to assert his long-hidden identity.

The novel does use our language of eating to great effect: Mudd will torment bullies by asking if they can have them for dinner, or telling children she’d like to gobble them up). This review is making no sense - I can do better -should be able to do better -- but my god -- I can't get the visuals out of my head yet. Seventh Seltzer has done everything he can to break from the past, but in his overbearing, narcissistic mother's last moments he is drawn back into the life he left behind.Beyond the practical, Seventh struggles with the sense of guilt and responsibility he feels – to his mother, to his people and to his unique cultural heritage. The novel’s most peculiar and most delicate turn is that Seventh – who begins by wanting nothing to do with his heritage – finds himself starting to feel responsible for the fragile chain of culture and tradition that connects him to his ancestors. Seventh is one of her sons who has broken free but is drawn back as the family gathers for Mudd’s death – after which, by tradition, they are expected to eat her. Irreverent and written with Auslander's incomparable humor, Mother for Dinner is an exploration of legacy, assimilation, the things we owe our families, and the things we owe ourselves. And anyone who has read Auslander before will know that when I say “applies his satirical scalpel”, I mean something more like “tosses a hand-grenade and runs away laughing” .
