Between Cathala and Maublanc you have games like Mr Jack, Jamaica, Conan, Five Tribes, Dice Town, 7 Wonders Duel, Ishtar: Gardens of Babylon and Draftosaurus. At least in the original you could see which tiles with crowns were coming out for the next turn and try to position yourself to grab one. If you liken the Kingdomino series to the Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Duel would be too little, Queendomino would be too much, and the original Kingdomino would be juuust right.

It’s like someone said, “Since you can’t really strategize here, we’ll throw you a bone that might help you clean up the mess made by the luck of the die rolls. You can argue that all this luck means that some games might leave you feeling punished for no more than being the victim of some badly placed dice rolls, but in all fairness, because its normal to end up both players looking for different shields, it never really feels like that. With the spells, only one player can get each spell so if you and your opponent each need a particular spell, you’ll have to race to get it first.The spell powers are really the part of the game where the “Duel” aspect comes into play, (other than it being just for two, of course.

The first player that crosses off all boxes in a row unlocks a special power that can be used once per game.Don’t worry too much about disputes; the local wizard has agreed to serve as an intermediary, and should you impress him, he may give you a bit of a boon with some of his magic. We had one game were almost no crosses came up; incredibly low-scoring game, and the only real reason I won was that I got an early cross of one type and just kept building on top of it. While I’m a big fan of this style of game play, I don’t like ones that feel as if they’ve just been thrown into that style for sake of marketing. The games can swing wildly based on what dice get rolled when, and even with a good plan you’d need some prescience to get the necessary information to do well with some of them. Yeah, you can lose arms and legs, there are spinning floor blades and pit traps, lootable containers on the board.

Each player then adds up the scores of each of their domains, adding them together to form their final score.Either way, it’s got enough going for it that I think it’s a fine adaptation of the base game, but I don’t think that it manages to distinguish itself sufficiently from its predecessor to justify me playing it rather than Kingdomino’s awesome two-player mode. Kingdomino Duel is a dedicated two-player game based on the bigger box tile laying games, Kingdomino and Queendomino. If you’re going to do it every game and you’re just going to choose whatever gives you the most points, why not just … include that as part of scoring? There’s no real way to strategize your acquisition of the powers, so they just add one more lucky thing to an already lucky game. As a bonus free action, you may color in the roof of your castle to add a cross to one of the dice you just took this turn.
