About this deal

Smoke from the fire drifts gently upwards through a wire mesh floor to dry out the barley, and the “peat reek” imparts a distinctive aroma which contributes to the character of the final spirit. Located on a remote island just off the West Coast of Scotland, Jura is an ancient landscape filled with wild mountains, peaceful lochs and stormy seas.

With approximately 200 Diurachs – the Gaelic name for the inhabitants – living on the island, most everyone there knows someone who works at Jura. Some casks will previously have been used to mature oloroso, fino or amontillado sherries; some will have contained bourbon and some will be oak. The last major rebuild of the distillery was in 1963, from whence it has been producing a variety of single malts. I initially tried this neat and the nose was smokey with a sweetness not unlike peat, a little bit of water allowed the chocolate and coffee through as well as hints of ginger and orange with the smoke more in the background.

Welcome to Jura: A few miles off the west coast of Scotland you'll find our island: remote, sometimes wild, yet always beautiful, home to 212(ish) islanders, one road, one pub and one distillery. Today, almost every family on the island has a member who works in our distillery, with our distillery or in whisky-related tourism. We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product.

If you’re creating an infinity bottle with your whiskies I would say this is a good option to bulk it out a bit given the relatively neutral and smooth flavour. One road, one pub and one distillery may not sound like much, but on Jura, the community thrives as one.For this most important of tasks, his equipment is simple – a tulip shaped glass, which will best capture the aroma of the whisky, and fresh water, which he adds to the whisky for nosing. The palate follows the nose with a narrower band of apple or bear to go along with a dash of brine before dissipating with a frisson of light smoke and pepper. The traditions of distilling and maturing Scotch whisky have evolved through the centuries, using crafts passed from generation to generation in a continual process of refinement. It is this lingering period during which Scotland’s cool, clean air steals through the porous oak of the casks and charms their contents, contributing further to the smooth and golden character of each distillery’s unique creation.
