About this deal

So I purposefully looked into creating a design where the contraption is much more backwards and you require people to row this boat. In his introduction to The Art of Rube Goldberg by Rube's granddaughter Jennifer George, Adam Gopnik argues that Goldberg is the more credible of the two. However, it is the drawings of outlandish contraptions that he produced regularly for The Tatler and The Sketch, that seem to have paid the bills – and explain why people might take the trip out of central London along the Metropolitan Line to Pinner today.

Besides admiring the detail and the perfect clean line drawing of this great artist, one of the reason why Heath Robinson's contraptions are so amusing is that he shows them as if they were practical and economical and naive solutions to everyday problems. He went on to illustrate Shakespeare, Kipling, and more of his own books, in colour and black and white. disputed (for: first dictionary appearances) – discuss] It became part of popular language during the 1914–1918 First World War as a description of any unnecessarily complex and implausible contrivance. His father Thomas, an illustrator and engraver, had to illustrate the main news story each week for the Penny Illustrated Paper. The combination of his facility with the medium and his unique vision means that, although these pictures are completely different from his commercial work, they are immediately recognisable as his. The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking, new connections, and new industries. Although his name is still regularly used in common parlance, the man behind the contraptions is not widely understood.

Trustee Beare is author of several books about William Heath Robinson and Chairman of the wonderfully named Imaginative Book Illustration Society. Spooner told WIRED: "His pictures are mechanical stories and his brilliance lies not only in the draughtsmanship but in his humour and his attitudes -- a lesson for automata makers who are prone to getting over-excited by machinery for its own sake. The characters were so utterly believable and going through such difficult situations that I couldn't pull my eyes away most of the time.Robinson's US counterpart, Rube Goldberg, on the other hand has been treated with more reverence: he has been featured on postage stamps, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, and annual competitions to build Rube Goldberg machines are held in his honour.
