About this deal

It just leads to an album that drags incessantly, not helped by how little variation there is the chugging synth progressions. Tastes Like Venom” is a pleasant slice of debauchery and the resulting steam from two opposites attracting while being bolstered by an incredibly catchy chorus, snappy beats, and tempo changes that enhance the song’s dynamics: especially that final half-time chorus. Tastes Like Venom’ is another solid floorfiller, but it feels like it’s lacking some oomph, or perhaps just the star-studded remainder of Unicorn ’s other opening songs overshadow it.

Named after the international icon of fantasy and imagination, UNICORN is emblazoned with the tagline “Imagination Is A Weapon”. And so, when he’s left to fend for himself as a singer here, there’s a distinct lack of awareness among Gunship of how prominent that weakness can be. There’s also contributions from legendary drummer Dave Lombardo and Tyler Bates, in a star-studded opener to the album that’s anthemic and easy dancefloor fodder. That album came out five years ago now, and the single prevailing memory of Gunship is their slavish desire to ‘80s synthwave, in a way that subsumed anything approaching a cogent idea or identity in favour of laying that devotion bare. There’s also some cool bits of The Prodigy-esque styling to crop up on Blood For The Blood God and Nuclear Date Night, and in general, the front half that’s loaded with guest stars makes for the most appealing fare, if only to see how they’re all used and arranged. This is an act that is apt at reaching into the inspiration junk drawer and always finding a handful of ideas that will suit their needs.

It’s impossible not to bop to, a glaring, neon-drenched synth banger that’ll lodge itself firmly in your skull. Another five years have passed and Unicorn is upon us and it is loaded to the proverbial gills with both songs and guest artists. While some of those track – such as the captivating “Run Like Hell” – are excellent they seem to pale slightly to that bombastic beginning. Tech Noir 2 by itself is a master-class in how to take a known and beloved quantity and somehow against all odds, improve upon it in every conceivable way while SOMEHOW retaining all of the originals DNA.

As with all Gunship's albums on the first listen it's rather nice, then before you know it you are playing it constantly as it's bloody excellent! This review was written by a jaded failed musician or someone who was left by someone for another mate who loves Gunship. GUNSHIP is so good at weaving their signature sound through so many stylistic lenses which range from dance tunes to industrial bangers and back again that one could easily assume that as this album bounces from song to song that this is a playlist rather than an album. It’s followed by ‘Empress of the Damned’, a glitching, pulsing anthem fuelled by the high, airy voice of Canadian electropop star Lights . It’s not even worth singling out individual tracks for the most part, either; there’s barely anything to single out!
