About this deal

The mystic pursuit of alchemy was at its height when Goldwasser premiered in the 16th century and must have had its influence on Dutch Mennonite inventor Ambrose Vermollen when he concocted the gold-dappled drink, as gold was believed to have many desirable (though vague) medical properties at that time.

The rich, syrupy, gold-bespeckled liqueur proved incredibly popular and was soon being served in royal courts throughout Europe, Louis XIV purportedly being one of the beverage's greatest early connoisseurs. Great poured over ice or delicious in a champagne cocktail, Danziger Goldwasser truly gives 'The taste of real gold'. Louis XIV was said to have been a committed fan, and by 1767 cases of the liquor were regularly being dispatched to the court of Imperial Russia’s Catherine the Great. When Danzig was separated from Germany in the aftermath of World War I, Der Lachs opened a second brewery in Berlin to supply its western markets. Someone once told me they are meant to cut the throat very slightly on the way down, to intensify the burn as you swallow. It starts with a base of neutral alcohol, to which a variety of herbs and spices are added, including anise, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and licorice.

Alcoholic solutions were used by artists for gilding, which is believed to be the inspiration for the drink. The guests of Kamienica Goldwasser have a unique opportunity to try traditional old Gdańsk liqueurs, warming Kurfursten, Machandel juniper vodka and, above all, the world-unique Goldwasser, a liqueur with 23 carat gold flakes.Born in New York City, Goldwasser obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 in mathematics and science from Carnegie Mellon. Packing an alcohol content of 40%, Goldwasser’s rich, syrupy taste saw it gain popularity, and it wasn’t long before it assumed favoured status by the kingpins of Europe’s courts. On a final note it is also said that the gold content of Goldwasser is useful in the treatment of back and joint conditions although it is unlikely that this was one of its goals 400 years ago.

Its secret original formula from the 16th century remains unchanged today and is the seal of its provenance and authenticity. In 2001 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2002 she gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing.Legend has it that when King of Poland Sigismund II Augustus visited Gdańsk in 1549 after his coronation, part of the city's homage to the monarch was a gift of Goldwasser, and he is said to have sung the praises of the golden drink often along the rest of his tour. Greedy merchants and landlords hauled it away by the barrel, but not the virtuous owner of restaurant Pod Lososiem – oh no; his vodka is filled with gold forever after for his good stead.
