About this deal

Rosalind pawns her grandmama's gold locket to pay for a third class train fare to London along with her younger sister 16 year old Patricia.

She keeps thinking back to moments when he was either cruel or showed a glimmer of sweetness or weakness. Abandoned by their parents and left to fight for themselves, the children comprising of headstrong Rosalind Carey, sister Patricia, brother Bertie who stands to inherit the castle, bookworm Walter and their grandfather Sir Lucien who is suffering with dementia after a long career in the Navy. I read the 5th book first then realised it was the 5th in a series so purchased the 4 previous books. The Carey children, Rosalind the eldest, Patricia, Bertie and Walter have neglectful parents their mother who wants to continue with her singing career so takes off to London and a father who is a botanist taking off for the wilds of Asia. I wonder how much my response to a book has to do with the moment I pick it up in time and start reading it. Also, I have a real issue when people in relationships ice out their partner, it's just a button with me, so as Lila tries to face her demons alone, I just wanted to shake her.

But--and I am sure all avid readers agree--there's something cosmic about closing your eyes, picking your next read from your heart, and then. Rae, who has loved Jessup since she was 14, has run away from her home near Boston to travel with him from place to place, and now finally in California, their relationship is dissolving. Daisy Belle, a talented young singer from the backstreets of Tyneside, has the potential to go far, and would-be impresario Jack Fidler sees her promise. Oh my I loved this book it holds so many secrets and tales that will keep you gripped into the story as you read. This contemporary world is set against a series of Russian folktales told by an old woman who lives at the edge of Manhattan, in a place so well hidden it can only be found once in a lifetime. But life has been hard for the Careys as they struggle to keep the roof over their heads and have racked up debts which they cannot pay. It is such a shame because I thought it was going to be so good and for me actually a bit different compared to Dilly's other books. The Carey family are struggling to survive living in their ancestral home and when a distant cousin turns up claiming to be the rightful heir there are many issues to be explored and resolved.
