About this deal

A popular way of imagining climate change is the apocalyptic event that floods, burns, sweeps away our cities and wrecks the ordinary ways of living we are so strongly attached to. I read a lot of autofiction because I like a feeling of plainness in a story, but I noticed a similar structure in several books. Certainly, there was a vitality to these queer, psychedelic beings and their inventive methods for making new life.

Almost every novel I’ve ever read, and I love to read novels, has a very contracted world, and there’s so much that these stories leave out. Daisy Hildyard’s first novel, Hunters in the Snow, received the Somerset Maugham Award and a ‘5 under 35’ honorarium at the USA National Book Awards. So, Emergency is a digressive novel which tells different stories about many characters (human and nonhuman), but each story takes off from a physical meeting. The beauty of Emergency is in its attempt to glimpse an expanded paradigm of meaning, which encompasses but isn’t limited to our own.In refusing to privilege human drama over natural processes, Hildyard captures the ecosystem’s delicate interconnectedness and suggests a new way of writing about our toll on the environment. Her second novel Emergency discuss the relationships between people and ecosystems in the wake of the climate crisis – through a surprising setting of 1990s rural Yorkshire. When he moves on he leaves behind an empty plastic noodle pot and we stay with that for a while… I imagined that over time, a picture of the area, and its workings, energy, and relationships, would emerge. It can feel impossible, as an individual, to decelerate or exit the systems that make all this happen.

These studies show that within a few days the whales’ bodies are picked almost clean by benthic organisms—those organisms that live on the seafloor. It is told by Lyudmila, who had, at the time of the explosion, recently married Vasily, “Vasya,” a firefighter. When the huge black rabbit who lived in a run in our garden had a nest full of babies, my parents had told me not to touch them.DH: Covid exposed interconnectivity to many people in new ways, or changed interconnectivity from something known, in an academic way, to something that was actually (and often cruelly) apparent or felt. Firefighters, soldiers, and volunteers began the attempt to put out fires, to seal the leak, and to clean up. So I’ll be doing a panel with Jessie Greengrass, who’s also written a novel that is using fiction to think about the climate crisis – and human relationships with the climate crisis, plus the environment more generally. Over the course of the war, Zuckerman took a particularly innovative approach to his investigations. Like Sebald and Sharpe, Alexievich is attentive not only to the human world, but to how anthropogenic destruction articulates itself on a wide landscape.
