About this deal

D. James' (1920-2014) Adam Dalgliesh novels as one of my re-read binges due to the fortuitous discovery of several of the early paperbacks while I was emptying a storage locker. Sally has quite a reputation as a ruthless social climber, and no one at Martingale seems too happy about the engagement. Martha has been using them to d some minor shelf wear, minor wear to edges, minor creasing, otherwise a very good tight and clean copy.

The owners are not even confused by the fact that a woman with a small child is not the best possible candidate, and Sally lives up to their expectations. James also wrote An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) and The Skull Beneath the Skin (1982), which centre on Cordelia Gray, a young private detective. D. James's electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense. However, I found it a very slow read and very dated despite it being set in the late 1950s/ early 1960s which was when the book was first published. Cover Her Face was adapted for television in 1985, starring Roy Marsden, Phyllis Calvert and Mel Martin. The only indication James ever gives that Dalgliesh is not a robot is that every now and then she'll have him think about his dead wife. She admitted that she had started writing crime fiction because she thought it would be easier to have a story published in that genre before going on to produce "proper" novels. I am easily depressed by descriptions of traumatic events, so when life gets particularly scary, I especially enjoy books where people have tea and try to be nice to each other. And there's only one man who can sift through the layers of deceit and pretence to unmask the truth: Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgleish. Martingale Manor House is the family home of generations of the highly respected Maxie family, who annually host the church fête in its grounds.

James is the author of twenty previous books, most of which have been filmed and broadcast on television in the United States and other countries. He spoke with satisfaction for he was a countryman by birth and inclination and was often heard to complain of the proclivity of murderers to commit their crimes in overcrowded cities and unsalubrious tenements.Murder shattered the tranquillity of her new home and Chief Detective Inspector Adam Dalgliesh arrived in the peace of a country Sunday to solve a case as mysterious as Sally herself. The lower classes are decidedly uppity, with their carefully tended council houses and a distinct touch of attitude toward their betters. What about varying things slightly - eg “whilst he sipped his tea, Z wondered if it could possibly be . D. James also made a great contribution to public life as a civil servant, a BBC Governor and as a peer of the realm.
