About this deal

I'd have liked having Program shift as an option on the front Control ring, but that's handled by the rear Control dial, after you half-press the shutter, then the EV button, a convoluted process. Luckily, the S90 opens up to F2 at its widest setting so if you are indoors in low light you can go up to ISO 800 and shoot at F2 to get shots even at night.

I think some of that would disappear with more use, but I'm not sure I'd fully master that rear Control dial. The S90 gets rid of noise by softening the images at higher ISOs, so the M9 has a much higher sharpness and signal-to-noise-ratio, but if you're not looking too closely, the S90 really does give decent images at ISO 800, slightly noisy images at ISO 1,600, and perfectly usable images at ISO 3,200. The Canon S90's lens reminds me of one feature that hasn't come back to the Canon G-series, because its maximum aperture is f/2. This includes the fact that there isn't a dedicated button for activating the pop up flash, so this is done via selection of the settings offered via the rear command pad/scroll wheel.I've read the expectation that the Canon S90 is a G11 in a smaller package, but that's not quite so. Canon kept the S90's sharpening quite conservative starting at ISO 800, resulting in a Gaussian-blur appearance which sharpens quite well, it turns out. The person this camera is aimed at is someone who wants a grab-n-go camera that also gives you great image quality in good light and is easy to use.

They have provided me with not only the small size (though larger than the S90) but also the Amazing quality I come to expect in a compact camera. To go with it, you can register up to five commonly used menu items to a My Menu tab in the main-menu system. No color bleeding or color shift to speak of, no banding, even though this is decent light (low kitchen light), I can tell this sensor performs well.

The low light mode is a new addition to the Canon range, boosting ISO up to an equivalent ISO12800, with the trade off being that resolution drops to a relatively lowly 2. If you change the WB and exposure and ISO for a shot, instead of having to reset all three for the next shot, simply flick the dial away from and back to C. Once saved to the C position, and all these settings come up every time you set the S90 to C, every time the S90 wakes up or is turned on in C, or any time you turn away from and then back to C. We've taken a closer look at the image quality and dynamic range impact of the move to a Stacked CMOS global shutter sensor. The other selectable options on the tool bar comprise white balance, Canon's familiar ‘My Colours' effects modes, an exposure or focus bracketing option - whereby three successive shots are taken - the ability to adjust the intensity of the flash, switch between evaluative, centre weighted average or spot metering, single or continuous shooting modes or the various image capture formats - including Raw or JPEG plus a widescreen format option. There is also an Auto mode that is pretty much Canon's reliable scene-recognizing Smart Auto feature.

It rises and falls under motorized control, rather than a springloaded mechanism that you have to press down to close. I really had no issues with the camera AT ALL during my time with it and I never even had to recharge the battery! If your camera scores in those ranges, likely its a camera that can produce excellent image quality for the class of camera that its in. These comprise the creative grouping of program, shutter priority, aperture priority, manual and a single custom mode, plus separate smart auto, low light, scene and video modes.Battery life is expected to be a little lower than average, at approximately 220 shots, and 300 minutes of LCD on-time in Playback mode. More surprisingly for a compact with a width not a great deal broader than your credit card, both Raw and JPEG capture are also offered. ISO 3,200 prints look good at 5x7, if a little soft, but sharpened as described above, they're remarkably good.
