About this deal

Twenty years later, the lives of the two men are very different: Ezra identifies as secular and atheist, while Yonatan has been ordained as a rabbi and even teaches at the academy.

A book that every man should read to examine their inner self and every woman should read to understand men. This attitude leads him to defend the socially outcast girl from the bullies rendering him their next target. Melbourne 1999: Ezra and Yonatan are best friends whose lives are forever changed when their school, the ultra-Orthodox Jewish Yahel Academy, is rocked by a scandal and they are thrown onto two divergent paths. Still, she effectively modulates her tone to give Scott, Martha's new friend, his own distinct voice.Initially, I suppose I was interested in fate, or rather the paths we start out on and then the paths our lives take. The novel’s glimpse into a rarely seen world — that of the ultra-Orthodox Jews of Melbourne — is riveting, while the careful pacing and intertwined storylines that switch between past and present gives the book a compelling, page-turning quality. Now maybe Martha just wasn't aware of what was happening because her sister was just that good at hiding it all, but I highly doubt it considering how smart Martha is, as this book leads you to believe.

Esther tells the story of a Jewish girl who becomes queen of Persia and manages to persuade her husband that he should save her people from their enemies. Though Martha is required to feed and care for the Abomination, the identity of this creature is not revealed until near the end of the book. Goldberg doesn’t rely on shock-value or voyeurism, making this a remarkably deep story about crises of faith and the ripple effects of secrets and scandal. I think Abomination is a very unique story as it combines friendship (Scott and Martha becoming great friends) and trust (Martha developed a very strong friendship with Scott and trusted him with her family’s deepest secret. Ashley Goldberg’s debut novel Abomination is a wonderful examination of orthodox religion in a modern setting and how its rules, conventions and traditions can be used to protect people who do wrong. We recognize and appreciate Penguin Random House Australia’s decision to publish a book of such high quality – one that enlarges the whole enterprise of Jewish scholarship and contributes to informed living, understanding, and entertainment for the entire English-reading world. This theme may be something being influenced by children themselves and so, whilst discussion of bullying would and should be an important part of discussing the text, it would need to be handled with appropriate consideration. Ashley- The first manuscript I submitted to agents was a short story collection in 2017, and while I received a lot of positive feedback what I largely heard was that short story collections are often a difficult sell to publishers unless there’s also a novel attached. I would rate this book 5/5 because it is very good and hooks the reader in, once you have started to read you won't want to stop reading until you have finished because it is so gripping.
