About this deal

One of the best things about having a 7-piece kit like the PDP Concept Maple and the Gretsch Catalina Maple is the diversity it gives you in your drum setup. You don’t have to set up each of the seven drums each time. You can choose to place different-sized toms for varying configurations. Drum Workshop's Collector's Series is all about custom drums built to the highest standard. You can choose from an array of shell materials and configurations, plus a huge palette of finishes and hardware options. Pictured is DW’s Cherry/Mahogany drum set. DW had previously used cherry as an outer veneer, but for the first time includes cherry as the sole wood in its Pure Wood series.

If you have a large drum setup, you’re most probably going to need more cymbals than the average drummer has. There’s nothing wrong with playing 2 crashes and a ride, but they will just look a bit bare next to all your drums. Mapex is another brand who seems to create drum sets which work in nearly all musical scenarios. Its Saturn drum set is an industry favourite due to its maple/walnut shell materials, and the more affordable Mars, Armory and Storm kits follow in the 'ultimate versatility' footsteps. Mapex drums tend to be pretty lively sounding - all about that 'punch'.The drums make use of Mapex’s SONIClear bearing edges (handed down from its more expensive ranges) to make the tuning range wider and easier to dial in, and SONIClear tom suspension system to help maximise the resonance. The 7-ply, 7.2mm shells are available in a few different set configurations, and there’s a snare drum included with each too. At best, a poorly set up drum set could be harder to play. At worst, it could lead to long-term injury. How to tune your drum kit Some drummers love the small kits while others love the large and extravagant ones. If you’re part of the latter group of drummers, this article is for you! The Recording Custom - commonly called the Yamaha 9000 - started life in the mid-1970s with Steve Gadd, amongst many other drum session superstars, swearing by its focused, punchy, pre-EQ’d tone. In 2016, with input from Gadd, the Recording Custom was revitalised, updated with a fatter, weightier lug, thinner bass drum shells, sharper bearing edges and even greater manufacturing precision.

Think of an acrylic drum set. You’re thinking of a Vistalite, aren’t you? There’s a reason why drummers like John Bonham chose the Vistalite over other kits, and it’s not just because they look awesome. Whether you’re setting your 7-piece drums in your home or studio, you’ll need to ensure there is more than enough room to accommodate them all. After playing it, I couldn’t help but think that the DW Collector’s Series Purpleheart Lacquer is one of the best drum sets you can use for recording due to how good the drums sounded through mics.

piece drum sets are sonically and visually impressive and are fun to play. They provide a greater range of tones, more opportunities for exciting rhythmic combinations, and offer a larger visual presence. Hoops are die-cast zinc, more consistent and structurally solid than triple-flangers. Aiding the hoops are Hold Tight washers, which have a stainless steel cup containing a rubber ring. This prevents de-tuning under modern heavy playing. Tama’s Star Series - also including Bubinga and Walnut options - is another step towards Drum Heaven... at an eye-watering price. If you do hit pro drummer territory, a) well done, and b) you'll probably have a pretty clear idea of the drum tone, shell sizes and kit configuration you’re now looking for. At this level you'll be choosing between premium quality drum shells, properly resilient, road-worthy hardware and maybe even a range of custom options to really make the drum kit of your choice your own. The Pearl Decade Maple is the current popular intermediate kit from Pearl. While it looks similar to Pearl’s Export kit on the surface, it has a few qualities that make it a better kit with superior tones.

I’ve played the Gretsch Catalina Maple drum set many times at my university; in rehearsal studios, in the studio, and on stage. It always delivers fantastic tones. Although some other acrylic drums are criticised for sounding too dry, the Vistalite shells have an inherent liveliness to them. They’re also significantly more predictable than wooden shells, as they don’t react to humidity and temperature changes - making them a perfect choice for travelling drummers. Yes, they’re a bit pricey, but you’re not just buying a great drum kit. You’re buying a future classic. If you're mostly practicing and playing in your house and can't make too much noise, then one of the best beginner electronic drum sets may be more appropriate for you. An electronic drum kit doesn't quite feel or sound the same as an acoustic one, but you'll be able to immerse yourself in your playing whilst donning a pair of headphones - and the neighbours won't hear a thing. Alternatively, grab a great acoustic drum set and a set of the best low volume cymbals for the best of both worlds.

The first step is to get the bass drum sitting level, and adjusting your stool height so that you’re sat correctly. From here you can start placing your drums and cymbals so that everything is within easy reach, allowing you to hit them without needing to twist or become uncomfortable. Also, a large car will help if you’re planning on transporting them to gigs and rehearsals! Configuring Your Setup Tama drums are another brand which has a rich and interesting history. Made in Japan since the mid-'70s, Tama drums have had a varied catalogue of artists, from Vinnie Paul and Lars Ulrich to Billy Cobham and Peter Erskine. Currently, Tama drums are loved for their punchy and bright tones, thanks to Maple and Birch being commonly used in shells. years since it first launched, Ludwig’s fantastic plastic set is still going strong. Available in Ludwig’s preset Fab (22”/13”/16”), Pro Beat (24/13/16) and Zep (26”/14”/16”/18”), with Bonham’s favourite 14”x6.5 Supraphonic snare), as well as plenty of toms and snares available individually, Vistalite’s versatility is one of its most underrated values. The acrylic shells naturally deliver a brilliantly fat, beefy tone which, when coupled with the right heads and right tuning, can make the Vistalite a kit for all occasions. DW continues to refine its already awesome Collector's Series. This new hybrid of cherry and mahogany offers a subtle variation of warm, sensitive and concise tones. But if that doesn’t quite float your boat, there are plenty of other custom options to choose from.
