All of the characters are unique in their own way: Melanie always cries, Pandora Green and Hamish are bullies and Thomas and Pete are just normal children and so is Jody. When Mr Majeika is hurt in an accident it becomes clear that Uncle Wilf is working for the wickedest of witches, Wilhelmina Warlock! As we grow, we learn that the magicians we see on television are only performing tricks, so the magic of watching them somehow fades. Class Three is astonished when their new teacher, Mr Majeika flies in through the window on a magic carpet.

Mr Majeika is the first book in a series of books that revolves around an extraordinary teacher with magical powers. Mr Majeika uses a little magic to make the evening memorable but nasty Hamish Bigmore tells the local press and gets the wizard-teacher the sack. The first example is during lunchtime when one of the student’s lunch drops onto the floor and Mr Majeika picks it up and asks the child “What is your favourite food”.

Both of these characters are also in the books, but Melanie is a much less important and very different type of character in the books, and is replaced by another character as female lead, Jody. These are lovely classic, harmless stories that are playful and fun for kids to read and don't use complex language, so they're very easy reads. Incidents such as ghostly sounds, vanishing people through walls and doors followed by strange lights ignite the sense of mystery and adventure evident in this book. And to everyone's delight, it looks as if Hamish will have to remain a frog because Mr Majeika can't remember the spell to turn him back again! Hamish Bigmore finds himself on the wrong end of Mr Majeika's powers after causing problems with his fellow students.
