I love how Lisa has combined tradition with diversity and fashion to create unique, colourful, bold, ‘badass’ cards ideal for modern, innovative and inspirational readings. It features contemporary dress (rather than the slightly off-putting faux Renaissance garb of the original RWS), the inclusion of modern-day technology like laptops and cell phones, and a somewhat more diverse array of body types and ethnicities than given in the Waite-Smith deck. This particular piece of work seemed to resonate with many of the people surrounding Lisa and she came to realise that through her pain and misery, she had finally arrived somewhere ‘on the other side’. In the case of the Chariot, the modernizing twist feels like it really adds something to the card; in some other cards, it doesn’t feel purposeful, and can end up feeling like more or less the same card as before, just with a different costume.

The cards are substantially heavy with a thick glossy finish that feels suited for outlasting years of daily use. I’m sure that at some moment in our lives, we all get to a point where ‘enough is enough’ and Lisa felt that she was at her lowest when she was reminded of ‘the ten of swords’ – the tarot card signifying defeat and woe. I know it may sound like those of us asking for representation are constantly moving the finish line but is that really a bad thing? This makes it a great deck for beginners, as the imagery will work well with just about any introductory Tarot book on the market.The box is predominantly white and printed with images from the deck, as well as a brief descriptor of the Modern Witch Tarot, and publisher’s details. The conflation of Black women and Strength (and also the suits of Wands and Pentacles) stemming from the “strong black woman” stereotype is harmful.
