About this deal

As I progressed through the series I became more and more invested in these characters, and this installment plays upon those feelings. I highly recommend you start with the first in the series, but this one met all my expectations and more. I think one of the reasons I love this series so much because justice usually wins out in some form eventually.

It seems, however, that you cannot cage a Smoak and by trying to force his hand, the president pushes Evan to extreme measures. Will he follow through for his own self-preservation, or will he adhere to his own personal moral code? In this one, X finds himself in sticky situations, but we are starting to see more reliance on others, slight signs of aging, and introspection on relationships. But it’s very hard to stick to the rules when the eighth book in a series you’ve always been drawn to lands on your doormat. Templeton has been on Evan’s trail for some time, hoping to bring him to justice for all of the crimes he’s committed over the years.Additionally, he’s written screenplays for or sold spec scripts to many of the major studios, and written, developed, and produced television for various networks.

On Evan’s other side, a lantern-jawed retiree was bragging to a gaggle of Australian coeds and anyone else within earshot that he’d been a member of the legendary Viking Squad S. Evan is once again a man on the government's list and is to be found and detained as quickly as they can. As it was being poured in front of him, another of the footballers snatched it from beneath the bottle and slammed it.

The President sends a huge special ops team to capture Evan Smoke just so that he can Kill lobbyist, Luke Devine. The next round of drinks arrived for the ladies—a vomitous concoction sugared up with pink grapefruit, elderflower cordial, soda, and topped with a cherry tomato. The President of the United States has given X an ultimatum: assassinate one of the richest men in the world or lose your life. I feel like the series needs a reboot, which maybe is what Hurwitz is hinting at with Evan’s unexpected challenges. A dark prologue follows horny young lamb Johnny Seabrook to a tryst that turns into a bloody slaughter.

At this point in the series, it's not even about the action-packed, fast-paced missions anymore (at least for me). The action quickly moves to an Icelandic glacier where Evan Smoak has travelled on a holiday for the single purpose of enjoying a rare vodka, distilled to perfection from the simplest of ingredients. So, overall I liked the idea of the plot and the ongoing story of Evan Smoke, and I find the composition to be of a high standard, but the experience as a whole left me feeling underwhelmed. However, there is a secondary storyline that comes up in the second half of the story that allows Evan to step back into his Nowhere Man role: Evan helping someone who needs his brand of help.
