About this deal

The blurb on the back of the book would have you believe that the story is about how Jill has to work really hard to afford her pony. Missing four lines from first paragraph describing the frilled chintz dressing table and how her case sent by carrier was there. Darcy, a local riding instructor, has had to go to London, and Jill along with some of her friends, is looking after the riding school in Mrs.

With hard work and the expert assistance of Martin Lowe, a wheelchair-using former Royal Air Force pilot, Jill becomes a star of Chatton equitation. My whole world as a pony mad child revolved around ponies, stables, riding and getting mucky, and of course I read everything there was to read on the subject, this brought back fond memories of the Jill series of pony books so I decided as an equally pony/horse mad adult to see if they still had the same charm I remembered as a child. It is easy to read and engaging, and I enjoyed the way that Jill directly "speaks" to and confides in the reader. Jill has just discovered she must spend the summer holidays away from her pony Black Boy while her mother does a book tour in the United States. I bought these books because of their titles; Jill’s Gymkhana, A Stable for Jill, Jill’s Riding Club and Jill enjoys her ponies.Jill has always been one of my favourite fictional characters, I loved her fire and courage as a child and still do, the books are witty and I like the way she and Ann always try to do the right thing but also are very cutting with bullies and fools! For our most recent podcast episode, I made Dave read Jill's Gymkhana by Ruby Ferguson, a book from 1949 about a young girl named Jill who comes by a pony, learns to ride and dreams of entering a gymkhana. It’s a must read for anyone who loves ponies and although some of it is quite dated it still resonates with any child who dreams of owning their own pony. P114-5/92 Final four paragraphs (19 lines) describing the jodhpurs/jacket being repaired and Jill trying them on have been deleted.

The Hampton printing has an addition to the original text on page 38 (both versions): to ‘You see, for ages I haven’t been any use at all, since I couldn’t walk, and it was getting me down. It wasn't nearly as problematic as I'd expected (though there were a couple of iffy moments in terms of discriminatory language) and it made me laugh more than I thought it would. Susan makes it very clear just how little she thinks of Jill, and Jill's chances in the local gymkhana. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too. once lifted me on to my pony himself, and there I sat in my little habit with my long fair curls hanging down to my waist. Missing five-line paragraph how when Ann arrives she has one of her little sisters with her, riding a new tricycle.Every girl in Jill's class seems to have a pony and they are all competitive riders who show up to all the events. These books have not been updated in the years since they were first published (1949 for Jill's Gymkhana) so some may find the diction slightly old fashioned but I think most pony mad youngsters these days wouldn't mind at all and would still find them wonderful. I've been a devoted fan of this series for almost 40 years, and though I still have my treasured paperback set, I love the convenience of the ebooks. And yet I know I knew that a bit at the time, and that I saw myself as pretty awful too, so we were good company for each other.

Money is tight and although Jill dreams of having and riding a pony of her own, she feels it is just that – a dream.to end; a little light foxing; foot of spine worn; some soiling to boards - a well-read copy Used - Good. Missing an eight-line paragraph where Jill reflects on her upcoming visit to Cecilia’s suggesting she will be ‘at her mercy’; how Aunt Primrose treats Jill like a child and how she doesn’t like her Uncle Henry (her mother’s brother) much.
