About this deal

From the very beginning the reader soon becomes accustomed to Ash's bad habits, cynical view on life and overall downbeat traits, of which followers of Herbert's work will recognise as a somewhat recurring theme within his novels. So, naturally, I should begin by talking more about this novel’s genuinely unsettling and disturbing horror elements 🙂 Despite a couple of well-placed gruesome moments, this story focuses a lot more heavily on psychological horror, atmosphere, bleak gothic horror, tragedy, suspense, implied horror, cruelty, creepy characters and the paranormal. The story is a little weak but is worth indulging if you want to read/listen to the longer books in the trilogy.

So, he wanders across the street to the local pub and has a drink before phoning his boss, Kate, to ask about the case. With suggestive bursts of ghostly appearances that become more and more frequent as the tale progresses, the old cliché of "am I going insane" is thrown into the equation, until finally the horrifying truth is revealed in an almost explosive manner. Before anyone who is a huge James Herbert fan starts mentally pelting me with rotten tomatoes, consider the fact that eons and a growing taste for more sophisticated haunted house stories now stand between this reading and my first time with it. While I found it to be not quite as good as his book The Rats, Haunted is, in my opinion, definitely better than Ash. Apart from that its a very clever little story and it does in fact trick you all the way, when it ended I thought oh my god I did not expect that!

I love ghost stories and have no problem with suspension of disbelief, but the author just didn't make this believable for me. David Ash, a psychic investigator, is invited to Edbrook, a remote country house, where an alleged 'haunting' is taking place. Unfortunately for David,he finds out the hard way that there are things in this world, better left unexplored, things that are tangible and can not only hurt the mind but the body. They dominated the others, the dark-furred ones, who foraged for food and brought it back to the lair.

Part of the Rats trilogy, international bestseller James Herbert's Domain pits man against mutant rats, who are back with a vengeance. At the beginning - I love me a Ghostbuster tries to debunk the haunted house story with lots of cliches.Behind the unsuspecting couple, Christina moves out of the shadows and follows them through the fog as they leave the platform. David was motivated by the death of Juliet, his twin sister, when they were 11, for which he blames himself. The Wolseley’s bodywork and wheels appeared to be in immaculate condition and its engine was running smoothly with only a mild escape of exhaust fumes from the rear.
