About this deal

For this fifth edition, Pete Sanders, Paula Williams and Andy Rogers bring the text up to date with recent developments in the counselling professions. Pete Sanders is clearly knowledgeable in the field and has devised a book that not only informs, but educates the reader. One of those does what it says on the tin kind of text books; good overall introduction to counselling written in an accessible fashion and is highly interactive as it engages the student in written exercises as it goes along.

The authors do not shy away from the significant themes and controversies and the role of identity, race, culture, power and oppression in counselling practice and training.I found it very helpful to read about different approaches in the beginning of the book, and the ways of obtaining certification to become a counsellor. Myira Khan, counsellor, supervisor and founder of the Muslim Counselling and Psychotherapist Network. Exploring pertinent themes for contemporary practice, it situates these discussions in the 21st century. This is not a ‘how to help’ manual; rather it is a questioning, curious, explorative and challenging companion.

This is not merely because the book was written during 2020, it’s because the authors have chosen to raise these crucial issues and not shy away from them. They are issues I must think about as I train, but more importantly, if I can follow their inspiration, I will be able to stand up for what’s right and help make the world a better place. If you are considering a course like me, want to learn about counselling skills as a helper or want an up to date look at current issues around counselling, then I wholeheartedly recommend you purchase this book. The authors offer the trainee and novice helper a rich overview of the role, purpose and value of counselling skills in contemporary helping roles. He is a white man and is fully aware of his power compared to the rest of the planet and this is what truly made a difference for me. A recommended read for anyone considering taking their 'First Steps in Counselling', or just interested in the field.
