Watercolor on Fabric:

  • Use Fabric Medium 5:1 with Liquitex Soft Body Artist Color to control colour bleeding. This method involves making your own textile medium by combining one part white vinegar, one part vegetable glycerin and two parts water together. I've designed more than 300 separate knitting patterns, hundreds of craft projects, and I love to bring joy to your crafts and knitting with well-designed, easy to understand tutorials and patterns. Our 21 Botanicals that are fabulous for your skin post doesn’t cover every single one, but will certainly give you a good starting point if you’d like to learn a little more.

Liquitex Fabric Medium enhances blending, workability, and adhesion of acrylic colours for painting directly on fabric or unprimed canvas. But I know one of my readers did try it – If you look through the comments she shared how she got on. We recently used our DIY fabric paint to make batik art on an old pillowcase using a glue stick to provide the resist. Our extensive range has over 28,000 products, which are constantly tried and tested by our in-house experts, teachers, and artists. I would do this for something like a Halloween costume that will probably be worn once and is unlikely to be laundered over and over.

I then threw the T-shirt in the washing machine with a detergent capsule and put it through a 40C wash (with my fingers tightly crossed!

white vinegar (weak acid) should not have had any affect on acrylic paints, and especially on getting them to fix to cellulose fibre. have plenty left over by the way Took me 3 coats and im pretty pleased with the results…but haha im noticing that everytime i touch the material it marks…i brush over it with my hand and it seems to go but thats going to drive me nuts if they mark everytime someone sits on them. I’m not familiar with the different components of house paint but would guess that it wouldn’t work so easily as it is designed to sit on top of what it goes on and might be crusty on the fabric.

If you wanted to color larger areas or an entire piece of fabric, fabric dye may be the more appropriate choice.

And why do a lot of fabric paints only have a teeny tiny applicator tip like the old-school “puffy paint” we used in the 90’s?If our homemade fabric paint has inspired you to try more fabric printing at home you might also be interested in our review of the Screen Sensation home screen printing system. A couple of artist sites suggest adding glycerine to acrylic paints, to make them act more like oil paints. You can apply Fabric Medium to any material or surface that will accept traditional acrylic media, such as canvas, paper, wood, etc. I’ve been trying to find a more eco-friendly and less expensive alternative to convert my acrylic and latex paint into fabric paint. Sorry sarah i forgot to mention the chair cushions are actually the old sprung wire seats covered in a proper thick apholstery fabric.
