About this deal

Nevertheless Arrow well done on another release with excellent extras but it’s a shame Barker isn’t involved in an interview only the introduction. In an article on Elfman, described as a rising composer in Hollywood who had just scored Tim Burton's Batman and was about to score Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy, Entertainment Weekly 's Ron Givens noted that Nightbreed wouldn't get as much attention as these two big-budget movies, yet Givens praised Elfman's "needle-sharp crescendos and creepy choral plainchants" and added: "Seldom has scary-movie music been so spiritual". Under pressure from his girlfriend Lori (Anne Bobby, Born on the Fourth of July), he attends psychotherapy sessions, unaware that his shrink, Dr Decker (Videodrome director David Cronenberg), is setting him up to take the fall for a series of violent murders.

This was the first coherent version of the movie, and was edited right up to the date of the screening to remove some superfluous scenes, including a few minor characters that died twice. From here the concept of Occupy Midian, the multi-pronged campaign named by Anne Bobby in an interview with the Clive Barker Podcast, was begun by Ryan Danhauser, Jose Leitao, Roger Boyes and Russell Cherrington.

Really looking forward to the tv series to make me appreciate the movie even more than I do already. In his review for the Toronto Star, Henry Mietkiewicz wrote " Nightbreed might have been a monster movie milestone, if Clive Barker's directorial abilities had kept pace with his skill as a master of British horror fiction. Barker always loved monsters and felt that "there's a corner of all of us that envies their powers and would love to live forever, or to fly, or to change shape at will. Over time, Barker expressed disappointment with the final cut approved by the studio and always longed for the recovery of the reels so the film might be re-edited. Decker ( David Cronenberg) is shown, which more clearly setups their relationship as doctor and patient, and quickly establishes Decker's bad intentions.

It’s charming enough to not be boring, but does not live up to the revolting hyper-theatricality of Hellraiser . Speaking of which, lots of additional creatures are shown inside Midian, showing off previously unseen practical effects.A drunken priest named Ashberry joins them as God's servant in their upcoming battle against Midian. This is the ultimate validation of choices made by myself and Mark Miller all the way back in 2008". Despite their grotesque appearance, they're a more colorful and engaging bunch than the emissaries of the normal world. Christopher Young had just written the music for the first two Hellraiser movies and would seem the obvious choice for Barker’s second film, but Nightbreed ended up being scored by a still up-and-coming Hollywood composer named Danny Elfman, who was developing his pedigree only one year after scoring Batman (in an interesting twist, Young ended up replacing an exasperated Elfman on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 seventeen years later).

They are the Nightbreed, denizens of a world beyond death, beyond the imagination, perhaps beyond anything you've seen. Later on, after Boone has died but before Lori is investigating Midian, there's an additional scene between Lori and her new friend Sheryl Anne, more clearly setting up her death later at the hands of Decker. He's only directed three films to date, Hellraiser in 1987, Nightbreed in 1990, and Lord of Illusions in 1995. A FL native, Michael is passionate about pop culture, and earned an AS degree in film production in 2012.

Both Barker and Miller have a habit of getting lost in nostalgia and congratulating collaborators, but this is a very informative track, including a number of behind-the-scenes anecdotes not already a part of the extensive fan mythology. The scene in which Lylesburg introduces the resurrected Boone to Baphomet is also longer, and there's a new scene where Lylesburg tries to stop Lori from looking for Boone inside Midian. The original film was full of nice ideas that seemed underdeveloped but the director does a short interview at the start of this version explaining his motives for the director's cut (he states it was butchered by the studio originally) and what wanted to achieve and I think he largely succeeded.Nightbreed has been released on DVD in various territories, but Scream Factory’s standard edition and collector’s edition Blu-rays are the only HD options, not to mention the first and only releases of the director’s cut version.
