About this deal

This will be gifted straight to my sister, who listened to the stories with me over and over … and remembered my own misdemeanors more than hers. Falls in the water, throws workmen's sandwiches around, but she is just a little girl and really more silly and wild than truly 'bad'.

In one story Father is asked to "mind" the little sister -- don't worry, Mother left them a salad and junket for lunch -- and he of course grumbles about what a bother it is to fetch his youngest child a glass of water (!The original illustrations by Shirley Hughes are charming, and capture all the delightful moods and expressions of small children. Unfortunately, although the stories were cute, the narration was pretty sanctimonious -- the older sister talks about her younger sibling being "thoroughly nasty" for wanting another ride on a roundabout, and "rude and greedy" for greeting an adult politely and then asking "may I have a lovely tea? Edwards helped to devise the radio show Listen with Mother on which her Naughty Little Sister books were broadcast from 1950, [8] and she also wrote for Playschool and Jackanory. This treasure trove of sibling naughtiness contains all five books in the series: My Naughty Little Sister, More Naughty Little Sister Stories, My Naughty Little Sister and Bad Harry, When My Naughty Little Sister Was Good and My Naughty Little Sister's Friends. But when she has measles she’s itchy and sad and grumpy and has to stay in bed and can’t be naughty at all!

This complete book felt like a sister complaining about her lil sister and also adoring her at the same time. In 1999 she was awarded an OBE for services to children's literature and in 2000 was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

She also edited several anthologies of short stories, folklore and poetry for children, chiefly on the subjects of magic, witchcraft and ghosts.

My Naughty Little Sister has charmed generations of adults and children alike thanks to Dorothy Edwards’ playful stories and Shirley Hughes’ beautiful illustrations. She delighted in visiting schools and meeting children, her warmth and obvious enthusiasm held audiences spellbound.
