They absolutely do and there should be nothing more frightening than the thought of waking up in twenty or thirty years with the sickening realization that the best years of our lives have slipped right through our fingers. When we do get our courses charted out there's absolutely going to be the temptation to relax, even to take things for granted. We have to somehow plan ahead and still stay flexible enough to dodge all the changes life throws at us.

The Weekly Notes System: This involves writing down three things each week that you want to accomplish. We tend to feel locked into whatever life we’re living, but this pallet of empty boxes can be absolutely whatever we want it to be. I had known of Tim Urban’s Your Life in Weeks calendar for some time, but this tempted me in to creating my own.It’s a wonderful resource to plan one’s life and to remind you how short life can be — and make each day count. When you’re running after something, you should not look left or right — what does this person think, what does that person think? And that might sound like a given, but it's amazing how many people have a career, a project, a relationship that they claim to be happy with, but lack any real enthusiasm for.

I began looking at the weeks and pondering life's big questions that are far too intense for the middle of a work day. The grey section marks the beginning of my professional employment, with the large blue section being my time at Rockstar North, and the green and red squares here representing the release of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 respectively. Everyone you know, everyone you admire, every hero in history—they did it all with that same grid of empty boxes. But what happened will impact how I communicate decisions (big and small) to those around me forever: Be extremely honest and genuine. When meaningful things happen (for both better and worse) I make a note of it so I can remember how much of life is influenced by these factors.

But what's more important, you will realize that if you don't take action now, it will never happen. The purpose of this isn’t to get us to march double-time but to get us to be more selective about how we spend our most precious nonrenewable resource: time. So much so that I began to look forward to meditation and forget about the outside world I left behind. Each box represents one week in your lifespan, with filled-in boxes indicating weeks you have already lived.It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you think about life in months or years, but weeks make it much more manageable.
