Established by Founder and Director Michelle Forsbrey in 2015, Mayim Mermaid Academy has trained over 2000 mermaids and mermen and offers a wide variety of bespoke mermaid experiences. There will be lots of fun things to do, like playing with the water catapult and singing round the bubble fire.Spending time with Marnie and her friends is fishy fun, and their undersea world will be very tempting to young landlubbers. Within the block of lessons, you will learn how to safely put on the fin and skin and enter and exit the water. Marnie has the usual start-of-school jitters but some of the other mermaids are kind and friendly, though one is very mean. I’ve seen and heard of children being compared to their older siblings or family members, just based on their relation to one another.

The ending annoyed me (would've been a solid four stars, otherwise) because it seemed to introduce a plot element and character development that, IMO, was rather unnecessary to the plot and left us with a new-thread-to-be-developed-in-future-book (? Dorset’s South Coast offers MERMAGICAL Beaches and the Jurassic Coastline, with some of the prettiest places in the UK to have a Mermaid Photo Shoot. On her first day, Marnie is upset when she gets told off after a sea snake comes out of her bag and blames her aunt for pranking her. Still plenty of illustrations but a bit more complex plot and vocabulary than the early chapter books.

Marnie is upset that the teachers seem to think that she is going to behave in a certain way because of her aunt and that people don’t like her and she doesn’t know why. Mayim Mermaid Academy is the UK’s first mermaid academy of its kind to share the love of mermaiding to other mermaids and mermen. What's more, her famous diva aunt Christabel was a notorious rebel at the same school, and got up to all sorts of naughtiness. The story of what happens to Marnie and how the whole book ends is very good and I like the way that Marnie thinks and acts towards everyone, and I like the message of friendship and being nice to others regardless of what may happen. As the lessons progress mermaids, will progress onto partner and group routines, advanced movements and mermaid fitness, testing their inner mermaid ability. Mermaid Experiences includes, tuition, tail hire pool hire a few group pictures, certificate and a magical MERMAGICAL experience you will never forget (in the Winter months photos will be taken on poolside). We held our first mermaid experience as a one-off event in February 2019, but it proved so popular that it’s now back by crowd-pleasing demand! I also wasn't a huge fan of some of the illustrations (the mermaids are okay but the ocean creatures not so much) but on the whole it was charming enough for me to seek out the next one in the series.
