About this deal

For those who know Penelope Keith only as Margo or Audrey from TV, her dramatic moments in this film will be a real eye-opener. After the start, Margery and Gladys confront in Margery's house and accidentally kill him, the plot follows a roller coaster of twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end.

Although Penelope Keith mentions "the George Formbys," his soundtracks are not used and he gets no screen credit. The two women are an odd couple with (they think) little in common, until an intruder enters Margery's house and she coshes him (from behind) with her Waterford crystal vase. The George Formby impersonators in Blackpool sing Formby's hit "Leaning on a Lamp Post" several times and also during the closing credits along with his "My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock. Penelope is perfectly cast as Margery, the snobbish wealthy Kent widow, and June Brown as Gladys, her cleaning lady. In 1999, a Norfolk farmer named Tony Martin (not the American singer) shot dead a teenage burglar who broke into his property. The journey is quite funny as the ladies travel by train to Blackpool with a bunch of George Formby (a major British film star of the 30s and 40s) impersonators, the perfect touch for their surreal journey.

B. worked their 'unlikely ladies double act' off perfectly, with Penelope's slightly snobbish employer of June's cleaner character. They prove to be more than a match for the unlikely pair of policemen, DI Woolley (Roger Lloyd Pack) and DS Stringer (Martin Freeman), who are left to solve the ladies disappearance and puzzling string of crimes which follow. Starring Penelope Keith and June Brown as the title characters, it was produced by Carlton Television for ITV and directed by Geoffrey Sax. It was subsequently repeated on ITV3 on 6 March 2016, its first repeat in the United Kingdom since its original broadcast in 2003.With the police, led by about-to-retire Detective Inspector Woolley ( Roger Lloyd-Pack) on their trail, the two women drive to Fleetwood, only to meet the childhood friend. Penelope Keith plays her usual middle class lady looking down upon all and sundry but her character is one dimensional and there is only so many times that you can chuckle at her snobby sarcasm and her superior tone of voice. Recently widowed Margery Heywood ( Penelope Keith) and her cleaning woman Gladys Gladwell ( June Brown) disturb a would-be burglar breaking into Margery's house in Kent. Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Glady. Because the intruder was attacked from behind, a controversial court decision found Martin guilty of homicide; he served 18 months in prison before the conviction was changed to manslaughter and he was released with time served.

While she meets the locals and even starts a new romance, she has to learn to let the life she planned for give way to a love she never could have imagined, and finds this festive small town is hiding one big holiday secret. A further shocking revelation takes the pair to Blackpool where another truth is revealed, leading to a genuine friendship and an end to their troubles. The unusual chemistry between Margery and Gladys uncovers a trail of mistrust, lies, deceit and extra-marital affairs. Penelope Keith (classy as ever) has played society matrons and snobbish beldames in several long-running sitcoms. Keith and Brown work very well together and are a delight to watch as they get deeper and deeper into trouble, in turn bickering with and rescuing each other.Britain has had a long history of mainly 'gentle' if somewhat bawdy comedies committed to celluloid. Read all Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Gladys' money, and giving petty crook Terry Mason a lift, they are pursued by the police.

The pairing of Penelope Keith and June Brown seemed a bit strange to me, but as there seemed to be nothing else on that night, I watched this, and I'm glad I did. Remake of the 1961 Disney comedy about separated identical twins who meet at camp, change places and hatch a plot to reunite their divorced parents. Instead of Texas highways, their getaway takes Margery and Gladys across the secondary B-roads of the Midlands, en route to sanctuary in (wait for it) Milton Keynes. This film reminds me of a Simpsons episode, when Marge is at a book-club meeting with Helen Fielding. If it had been in the cinemas, Penelope Keith and June Brown would have been honored with Oscar nominations. When a driven doctor doesn't get the prestigious position she planned for, she unexpectedly finds herself moving to a remote Alaskan town. Haughty, recently-widowed Margery Heywood and her cleaner Gladys Gladwell go on the run after mistakenly believing that they have killed a teenage burglar, holding up a post office for Gladys' money, and giving petty crook Terry Mason a lift, they are pursued by the police.
