About this deal

Po Campo is a Mexican character who walks beside the wagon all the way north being the closest to nature of all of them.

There is a younger man Newt that was adopted by the crew after his mother, a local prostitute named Maggie passed away (I believe her story is told in Comanche Moon. Before this however, he goes to the ranch and after some reminiscing, plants the idea of a cattle drive up into unsettled Montana. In Lonesome Dove the two ex-Rangers put together a Company themselves for their epic task - seven members. Gus, rebuffed by Clara and no longer Lorena's sole caretaker, decides to continue on the cattle drive and see the journey to Montana through to its end. What impresses me most about this book is that the fates of the characters are neither cornily predictable nor deliberately surprising. So every couple of years, I do a rereading of the book and then I break out the DVD of the miniseries and I immerse myself in the perfection that is this story. Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize winning novel is a powerful, triumphant portrayal of the American West as it really was. His nickname derives from once having drunk dishwater on a cattle drive, being so thirsty that he could not wait for the water barrel.

Lonesome Dove, written by Larry McMurtry, is a sprawling epic that takes readers on a remarkable journey through the American West. I have no doubt that if you like westerns and/or the style of epic story telling this is, as the other positive reviewers and Pulitzer Prize assessors indicate, a worthy novel to read. Before leaving in the spring, he puts Newt in charge of the ranch and gives him his horse, his rifle, and his family watch, but still cannot bring himself to publicly acknowledge the boy as his son. The cook that wanted to hold him at the grub for more than ten minutes had better have a side of beef handy. He whacked the dinner bell because he liked the sound, not because he wanted anybody to come and eat.Men he'd ridden with for years were dead and buried, or at least dead, because they'd crossed the river under a full moon. I came to Lonesome Dove after reading The Octopus by Frank Norris (written in 1901, heavily influenced by my favourite naturalist author Emile Zola, and in my view a remarkably brilliant novel appearing ‘like’ a western, about the abuse of the farmers by the railroad). He didn't really care what the question was, and it made no great difference to him which side he was on. The springhouse was a little lumpy adobe building, so cool on the inside that Augustus would have been tempted to live in it had it not been for its popularity with black widows, yellow jackets and centipedes.
