About this deal

Especially ‘Holy Water’ is undeniably uplifting and will sing through your head for the rest of the day. She sings her truth, but never in a self-absorbed manner that would alienate her audience and she definitely brings the tunes too. Album (CD or MP3) and book (paper or Kindle) combine to provide an insight to Janet's struggles with alcoholism (from age 17) and her suicide attempts when she was suffering her lowest ebbs. Since then she has released her debut album, Running with Scissors (2014), which is followed by Confessional, due for release in May 2020.

The chorus is infectious and should become a big singalong moment when Devlin can finally go out and tour with this record. Good Records is a genre independent record label established in 2010 to distribute, market, and promote artists and music that defy boundaries, reject limitations, and transcend the ordinary. In 2011, she competed on Series 8 of The X Factor, making the finals and gaining a place on the live arena tour. That baptism of fire into the music industry wouldn’t be easy for the toughest of individuals, but it was Janet’s gentle, sensitive, and even vulnerable interpretations on X-Factor that engaged her to the masses. After teaching herself to play instruments by ear and penning her own songs, she gained a following on YouTube; she now has nearly half a million subscribers and was named one of the company's most influential YouTubers in the UK in 2018. A real highlight however must be cutting my vinyl at the studio - I had never seen the technique before and had the best time immersed in the process, and even got Christian to engrave a personal quote from me onto the lacquer. This deals with a first kiss that turns into a deeply sour affair; due the boy involved giving a rather nasty depiction of events to everyone at her school, and the isolation and shame that came with that.

Janet Devlin got a lot off her chest and managed to deliver a grown-up, cohesive and well-crafted record while doing so! The track, penned by Janet with Nathan Thomas and produced by Jonathan Quarmby ( Lewis Capaldi, Tom Walker, Benjamin Clementine) is the singer’s announcement to the world that her frank admission of the sins and stories that have defined her journey, will soon be revealed. The highly anticipated sophomore album is fueled by pop songs that wear not only their hearts, but their scars on their sleeves, sharing Janet’s extraordinary personal journey. With its thundering drums – not to mention uilleann pipes, accordion, fiddles, bodhrán, cows ribs and whistles – ‘Confessional’ is the fusion of Janet’s identity, inspirations and influences, transforming it from not only a great introductory piece for the upcoming album, but also a fitting foundation for her re-entry to the musical landscape. This song she wrote about learning how to live with an experience with sexual assault is equally heartbreaking and empowering, as she ends the song saying she is ‘ready to speak’. After receiving a Masters in Music Technology from the CIT Cork School of Music, she went on to operate as a producer under the name Blakkheart. Confessional is an honest, brave and knowing cathartic journey, dealing with addiction, self-harm, religion and sexuality. We open with Confessional; a pounding, tribal Celtic affair; bringing to mind a raucous tavern scene from Brave or Lord of the Rings; making you want to stamp your feet and rise from your seat in alliance; Confessional is a resounding and brave battle cry of what is to come, and what will be faced.

That moment of reflection has finally come however with her incredibly candid new concept album Confessional. Having followed her career from the very beginning, that realisation suddenly makes me feel incredibly old, as both milestones seem like forever ago.Calendar arrived safely in plastic-free packaging - which I've not seen before with a calendar, so kudos for that. For all that, Devlin delivers a stinging riposte to the music business as an entity and to some people in particular. Big Wide World’ is perhaps her most upbeat earworm track to date, but yet it still works amongst all the more contemplative offerings. This sets the tone for an album that does not shy away; or attempt to dilute some of the darkest, most vulnerable moments in life; this album faces these uncomfortable periods head on, with unrelenting ferociousness.

Beautifully executed, a demonstration of maturity, strength, courage, wisdom, and survival, we commend Janet Devlin’s ‘Confessional’ to you. Devlin asks on Honest Men, which addresses the sense of displacement she experienced while initially floundering. A brief intermission back into Irish trad/folk with Speak; a rework of one of the most famous Irish laments ‘Oh Danny Boy’. However, this album cuts through all of this; not only in how it fuses genres from different ages (with magnificent results); but how it weaves trauma, addiction and mental illness into such an astounding body of work. And now, as she releases her second album, Confessional, Janet translates this frankness into an honest and poignant book, openly disclosing the experiences which have inspired her latest songwriting.
