About this deal

I happened to check the goodreads reviews after I read the story, and someone mentioned the illustrations for the Asian characters. You have staff who are supposed to keep you from looking like an ass yet you still look like an ass. This book would obviously be fantastic in a classroom as a spring board for lessons on pets/dinosaurs but also has some good linkage opportunities with self care, daily routines, nursery rhymes, creative problem solving and more - I think it would be a brilliant resource for any educator to have on their shelf!

Maar tegelijk: het is één figurant, zonder actieve rol in het verhaal, waar je los over kijkt als je het boek leest op het ritme van de vlotte rijmende tekst. The book encourages active participation from children, with many key nouns replaced by an image causing children to fill in the blanks for themselves. This is one that I will NOT do again, and it is a good reminder for me to pay closer attention to the illustrations before selecting storytime books. Furthermore, what I especially liked was the incorporation of the protagonist as a BAME character, interestingly in a 'normal' setting and not used to highlight differences or discrimination. It has numerous opportunities to use books as a feature of cross-curricular learning, for example for KS1 and KS2 science, rhyme in English and maths through the comparison of dinosaurs to measurements. With playful illustrations, If I Had a Dinosaur is a charming, witty, rhyming story celebrating the power of a child’s imagination. It would need lots of food to eat, a swimming pool to drink from, and a dino flap so it could come and go. In online images, the color of the Asian children seems less offensively yellow than it does in the printed book in front of me. A little girl wishes ever so desperately that she could have a pet, but she's unsure about what kind of pet she would like. A witty and charmingly illustrated bedtime story about a little girl who imagines what it would be like to have a dinosaur of her very own A little girl dreams of having her very own pet.

We see the little girl tell us all about her new pet, what she will do with it (like learning it the alphabet), how she would feed it/care for it, about his enormous. One content warning: there is an entire spread devoted to the question of how to clean dino-sized droppings with an unsubtle depiction of such (think the poop emoji with no face). I particularly love that the story is about a little girl as so many dino books are targeted at boys and its doubly great that she happens to be non-white too. Il testo è in rima, così è facile sia per i bambini sia per chi legge, dare un ritmo incalzante alla storia; anche i disegni sono molto belli, ricchi di particolari da scoprire e commentare insieme al proprio bimbo. I thought this was a fun enjoyable book to read about pets whilst also including a variety of representative characters throughout to make every child feel included. HOWEVER, the way that Asian children are portrayed in this book is absolutely appalling and disqualifying.

Also, only the yellow children have eyes that are slanted lines instead of the round dots sported by all the other people in the story. It's a rhyming story and those are rarely appealing to me (this one is no different) because they always seem somewhat forced (unless it's Dr. Educational but silly, this is the perfect book to read with a child that is starting to attach words with images.Er zijn een aantal reviews die kritiek geven op het feit dat er een Aziatisch kindje voorkomt in het boek met een groenige huidskleur en spleetogen. The bouncy rhyming text is jaunty and fun to read aloud; the simple, cheerful illustrations are cute and colorful, and filled with clever little details for sharper-eyed readers (see if you can find the fun nod to the Harry Potter universe); and it features a multi-racial cast, including a protagonist of color and her family. And from the first appearance of the sweet-faced, bright-green dino of the books, she was delighted. Written in lively, witty rhyme and accompanied with charming, childlike illustrations, If I Had a Dinosaur will leave both adults and children wanting a dinosaur of their very own! Lovely picture book with the ability to assist children to make connections between what they are seeing and reading.
