About this deal

It’s so enjoyable that I question if I need the vinyl counterpart, but that is a null thought as the artwork is worthy of ownership alone. That said, as it pertains to the Dolby Atmos surround sound mix, also on Apple Music, it isn’t as hard-hitting and rocking as the stereo mix and sounds a little muddy in places. The emotive, piano-led Raise Your Horns is a decent closer, but if your skin doesn’t prickle when Lzzy sings the opening lines of The Steeple – a song made for crowds, the stage, the very things we’ve missed – then you should probably check a few of your other vital signs. According to Ed Ford of Rock N' Load, "If people wanted to know what the perfect rock album sounds like, give this a blast, you won’t hear much better. Grammy-winning hard rock band Halestorm announce Back From The Dead, their fifth studio album due out May 6, 2022, and follow-up to 2018’s Vicious.

The album received generally favorable reviews from critics, often based on Lzzy Hale's performance. The treble is dialled back and is, subsequently, a little less pronounced, but Hale’s vocal is also a little distant in the surround mix. In the words of Chad Bowar of Metal Injection, "This album does a better job of getting closer to the energy and passion of the band's live shows than the last one [ Vicious] did. While HALESTORM stick to their formula of easy-to-digest, relatively short rock songs — most under four minutes — on "Back From The Dead: Deluxe Edition", the songwriting and performance quality is top notch, proving why they're one of modern rock's most popular bands.

We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres.

Naturally, it isn’t only Hale’s prowess on the microphone that makes such an impact for the band is on fire throughout this hard rock masterpiece. All tracks are written by Lzzy Hale and Scott Stevens, except track 6 by Lzzy Hale, Zac Malloy, and Scott Stevens; and track 8 by Lzzy Hale, Joe Hottinger, Josh Smith, and Arejay Hale No. Lzzy and her brother, drummer Arejay Hale, often site the towering, arena rock sounds of the '70s and '80s as inspirations, and that comes through on the release. Ripping songs such as early single "The Steeple" and the album's title track—tracks from the original release, showcase Lzzy's gutting vocals and precise, powerful guitar work. I’m all for Atmos mixes when done with intent, but I certainly don’t believe it should be done for the sake of ticking a box.

With Strange Girl, you’ll be met with a wall of sound but that’s far from a bad thing, especially for this style of music. It’s up against 2012’s breakthrough sophomore release The Strange Case Of… for that accolade, but if context is taken into consideration, it’s a contender. From the introductory salvo of crashing guitar chords and screamed-from-the-guts vocals, it’s clear that this is a new Halestorm. Hale’s incredible vocal is the magical element that ensures Wicked Ways is a highlight of the album. On the throat-busting Wicked Ways and Psycho Crazy, her envelope-pushing performance is like that of a woman running from – or maybe towards – an avalanche.

As for the deluxe portion of "Back From The Dead: Deluxe Edition", the new songs on the album should appease HALESTORM fans who are already gunning for a follow-up. She was stuck with them due to lockdown despite them not being supportive, so she had conversations with Hale and other fans online. It is a journey of navigating mental health, debauchery, survival, redemption, rediscovery, and still maintaining faith in humanity.

During the lockdown period, the band was forced to cease their customary schedule of frequent touring while finding ways to financially support their staff and crew. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Mastodon, Alice in Chains) with co-production by Scott Stevens (Shinedown, Daughtry, New Year’s Day), Back From The Dead quickly evolved from songwriting exercises into a matter of survival for the band, taking the listener through ‘a journey of navigating mental health, debauchery, survival, redemption, and rediscovery, while still maintaining faith in humanity’ says frontwoman Lzzy Hale. One thought sustained us – the certainty that adversity breeds creativity, and that from this darkness would come some of the best rock music ever made. It’s Halestorm 101 and while it may not break new ground, you know exactly what to expect and Halestorm delivers.

The original album and deluxe edition both move from track to track well, with a good mix of hard-charging rock songs sprinkled with choice ballads. Alter Bridge, Halestorm, Neck Deep, Bob Vylan, Hot Milk, Palaye Royale, Jinjer and more join this year’s Download Festival. My Redemption slowly brings us back to rock elements more frequently associated with Halestorm and while I wouldn’t suggest that My Redemption is a standout song, it’s another album-filling tune that ensures Back From The Dead remains a memorable album experience. Ask any modern rock fan to name a few of the most powerful women in the genre today, and Lzzy Hale will likely be high on the list. Terrible Things slows the tempo considerably, but it’s a beautiful song and Halestorm has the musical chops to deliver both ballad-styled tunes and heavy hitters alike.
