About this deal

The Farpoint 55 and Fairview 55 are essentially the same product; the only difference is that the Fairview is a women’s specific version. With this system, you don't have to check any bags but get to maximize your carry on luggage with only one travel pack. If you want a better organizational system built into your bag, then you might be more into the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag.

I’ve traveled with Farpoints for years and have personally decided to upgrade to this latest edition. We know it doesn’t seem like a huge deal, but having padded carry handles is great when you’re loading/unloading your bag. This backpack is also the kind that has a zip going right the way round like a suitcase, unlike a toploader. The main complaint people have about the big bag is that there isn’t much of a built-in organizational system. I created The Savvy Backpacker to be the most comprehensive resource for planning your trip to Europe. Inside the main cargo bag is a mesh pocket ideal to separate dirty clothes and shoes and internal compression strapsfully maximise the capacity whilst securing your gear. However, the Porter is a little smaller and less intense than Farpoint, making it a better option for short-term trips. Would the Fairview 40 and a Daylite Plus pack suffice since she will be packing lots of thick winter clothes?

Then, put the big back in the overhead bin as your carry-on and use the daypack as your personal item. And the second problem is that only the small personal bag has a laptop sleeve for easy access during security checkpoints. Even my husband, Oto, who was skeptical about me getting this backpack, said that he would put his packing cubes of the essentials in my backpack the next time we travel together. Conversely, if you need a bigger bag, and you don’t care about staying under the carry-on size limit, the Farpoint 70 (55L backpack + 15L detachable daypack) is a great choice. Then, explore the complete Gifts and Gear series for more reviews and roundups of the travel products I can’t live without. The bag fits the size requirements for carry on bags on most major airlines, which recently saved me money on my trip to Portland.

As such, this is the bag to take on extended international trips, including those in which you might be doing some backpacking. There are not many downsides; the only one I could think of is the inside space of the main backpack.

In my opinion, the Porter also has terrible shoulder straps, while the Farpoint’s are very comfortable. I prefer to carry my bag backpack-style, but many people prefer carrying their pack like a suitcase. Nate, the founder and CEO here at TL, has actually carried the Osprey Sojourn Porter 46 to over 60 countries so far! On the inside of the main bag is a large zipped mesh pocket which is ideal for dirty laundry or small travel accessories that you want to keep at hand. This is an excellent resource along with your packing list… I have been undecided about the bag because I wasn’t sure it was large enough but your packing list has me convinced that it will work! There are a few things that make the Osprey Farpoint 55 such a comfortable bag to carry no matter how long you’re on your feet. While it does sacrifice a bit in terms of organizational features, and can get bulky when packed full, overall the Osprey Farpoint 55 is a g r e a t backpack for travelers looking for a complete carry-on bag system. It has very handy handles on both the main and day packs which lend confidence when grabbing the pack from any side or angle, with or without the day pack attached, off a baggage carousel or anywhere else you might be grabbing and tossing it.
