About this deal

She arranged his attendance at Maidenhead Technical Institute, after which Stanley attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

Often described as a particularly “English” artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolor the nuances of the British climate. The English artist Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was a painter of watercolours and murals, a book illustrator in wood engraving and lithography, and a designer of transfer-ware, pottery and porcelain. After school he continued to pursue his interest in the arts, working as a commercial artist but also, foreshadowing his later occupation, as model and furniture maker, before studying what would become his main concern, architecture, at Regent Street Polytechnic (1938-41). The colour quality of the paintings is however disappointing as anyone who is familiar with the works on display at the Saffron Walden Fry Gallery and elsewhere will immediately notice.White Horses is the recreation of the 'lost' Puffin Picture Book that Ravilious was working on during the Autumn of 1939 and although reached dummy stages was ultimately abandoned. The second chapter focuses on his woodcuts - he was one of the finest exponents of the form - and his book illustrations; there was always a strong illustrative bias in his work. About the Author: Alan Powers was Professor of Architecture and Cultural History at the University of Greenwich until 2012. Ravilious' work always seems to me to embody something quintessentially English, both for good and ill: it accounts for its charm and its limitations.

A superb, near fine copy, showing only trivial wear to the spine ends and corners and a prize label (to Paul Sharp) to the front pastedown, in a very good glassine with a couple of minor chips and two closed tears. Agreeing a compromise, his father sent him to study machine draughtsmanship at the Knirr School of Art, Munich, with the thought that this would give his son a skill he might apply professionally. Often described as a particularly ‘English’ artist, key to his style was an ability to convey in watercolour the mild vagaries of the British climate.Though Ravilious' work is never going to set the world alight, it certainly warms my heart and is a delightful feast for the eye. It has a loose cover that opens and tells the story behind the Ravilious dummy and how this new book was produced. Publisher's dark blue cloth, silver lettered to spine, pictorial title label to upper board, housed in matching slipcase. Keith Vaughan Keith Vaughan was born at Selsey, Sussex (1912) to Eric George Story Vaughan, a civil engineer, and his wife Gladys Regina Marian Mackintosh. The Maidstone Press reprinted the original images and text for this stunning new edition which includes essays by Alan Powers and James Russell as well as many other illustrations relating to the original book.

VERY GOOD DJ intact, clear plastic cover, internally and externally good, pages clean, black and white plates, illustrations, minor wear to DJ, 10' x 7. Contains 100 printed pages of text featuring all 24 of Ravilious's illustrations in exquisite colour and includes an essay by Gill Saunders, Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum. This is a beautifully produced book worthy of a place on every lover of English landscapes bookshelf.

Author James Russell sets out to discover the places that inspired Ravilious, explore the remarkable books he illustrated and meet the people he portrayed. His death at 39 years when his plane disappeared near Iceland was a great loss to the English watercolour school.
