About this deal

I will help you be the hero of the party, game night, or family gathering by helping you make simple, informed decisions on which board games, video games, and outdoor games to invest your valuable time and money. This is a very simple take that game which will either be a hit with your gaming group or fall flat. You're not defenseless though; you can reveal your own matching assets or wild cards to protect your top set. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy and Cookie Statement and Your California Privacy Rights.

The winner of the challenge then takes ALL of the cards used in the challenge and combines them with the original set of cards they fought over. The first of which is forming a set by pairing two cards from your hand, pairing a card from your hand and the top card of the discard pile, or pairing cards by using one of the wild cards (silver or gold). This is because any assets at the top of your pile are likely to be attacked by the other players and could be stolen. This is one you'll break out for your non-gamer friends and to kill some time between weightier games. You then go back and forth until the attacker or the defender concedes (willfully or is forced to concede by not having another card to play).

The “take that” nature of the game — even though it’s light — probably won’t go over well with them. If you cannot or do not want to do any of the above three actions, then you must discard a card from your hand and draw a new card from the discard pile. The decision space is limited enough that downtime doesn’t increase a ton, and also you can get robbed by any player at any time, so there’s still stuff happening even when it isn’t your turn. I appreciate the fact that the game includes advanced rules and the changes for two or three players.

Sure, the place where this breaks down a bit is that the game relies a bit on luck to make some of the magic happen, but that should cancel out over multiple rounds, in theory (and even if it doesn’t, it’s hard to care too much, unless you never draw a Wild card, which is frustrating). It means that the game sets the terms of those interactions and you have a pretty good idea of what to expect. If you cannot make a pair or challenge, then you would need to discard a card from your hand into the discard pile. My favorite moments are sneaking in after a hard-fought, costly battle between two other players and effortlessly taking the entire stack…to the chagrin of the previous winner!

While I sincerely hope no fist fights break out while playing Cover Your Assets, there will be plenty of thefts and power battles. Make a pair from the discard pile: If the top card in the discard pile matches a card in their hand, the player may take the top card and make a pair with the card from their hand. And by more I mean, be warned, this game is so fun it may quickly go from “filler” to “holy cow, did we really just play that for 2 hours straight! At the start of the game everyone is dealt a hand of four cards with the remaining cards forming a draw pile.

I think, given how easy it is to block (and how helpful blocking is), there’s a real incentive to just make your own piles and let well enough alone for players that don’t like take-that.Now that I have been on both sides, I can honestly tell you the Pros and Cons of the game, Cover your Assets ( other games by Grandpa Beck I would highly recommend). There's a good deal of luck and a whole lot of stealing, but I suppose that's what it takes to become a millionaire, at least in this game. So, when Grandpa Beck’s Games gave us a chance to review Cover Your Assets, I was happily on board to give it a try. It would be nice if there were a way to defend against that sort of behavior, but that’s more of a social problem than a game problem.
