About this deal

As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie’s mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm. would be really shameful to be associated with anybody in this visual sewage, and being related to any of the associated people would probably make me cutting ties and drift away, changing name and all. The film’s underlying is a positive one; despite the unhappiness felt by many in the film they all act unselfishly, or at least that’s probably what they’re telling themselves. As Andy is very sick he must stay within his home per the instructions of his mother, Katherine ( Samantha Morton), who also forbids him from having any visitors. A couple who keeps their sick son in a secluded environment find their controlled lives challenged by a young girl who moves in next door.

It should not be dismissed as ‘just another’ mundane ‘horror’ film but should appeal to those who want more than John Carpenter soundtracks and bumps in the night to keep them engaged. There is little if anything to like about this woman who is married to an amiable, biddable but overwhelmed/ henpecked nurse who has given up his job to be a stay at home dad for their sick son Andy. Played by Natasha Calis, the young Maryann who befriends Andy represents the modern female; she is strong-willed, brave and fearless. Katherine is well respected medial professional that is until she goes home where both her and her husband have been home schooling their only son Andy who has a number of medical conditions. I WAS ACTUALLY STUNNED by some of the poorer reviews, but if they were based on the premise this was a horror I can almost understand, as although there are truly horrible / horrendous aspects to the narrative, it is a THRILLER.It is disclosed that the heart transplant, that is about to take place, is for the real Andy, Katherine and Richard's biological son.

Can’t Come Out To Play explores ideas surrounding the role of the woman; with the two main female characters representing completely opposing ideologies. That being said, the film seems to intertwine between two families and the maelstrom of chaos that unravels. Samantha Morton is no Kathy Bates and McNaughton doesn’t quite reach the macabre ‘normalcy’ of Misery but ‘Can’t Come Out to Play’ is on some levels reminiscent of Rob Reiner’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel. It manages to find its stride at the half-way point, but up until then it does drag ever so slightly.John McNaughton sought a PG rating for the film, but failed: "I made a promise that I would deliver a movie with no overt violence, no bad language, no sex, no nudity. However, Maryann's visits continue in Katherine's absence; she even takes Andy outside to play baseball.

The abnormal becomes normal and the terrifying question arises – how far will she go to protect her son? There is a surprising finale, which is all the more hard-hitting because you’ve been on a long journey with these characters. He does get a 1-up on her at one point and it’s a great little moment, you’ll cheer him on and then realise you’re genuinely terrified for his safety. In her role as Katherine Young, Samantha Morton provides a disturbing insight into the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.

Clearly we all have different ideas of excellence, but writing as someone not knowing anything about this movie, prior to viewing, I have to agree it’s NOT A HORROR movie, but IT IS AN EXTRAORDINARY PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER, which from beginning to end traces a brilliantly well executed and acted entry into the world of a crazed mother/physician played so well by Morton. We never know how Kathleen’s going to act and her personality shifts more suddenly than the British weather. Katherine's behavior grows even more volatile, while Maryann discovers that Jason was abducted from the hospital as a baby. Also another child actor who should really be congratulated, Nolan Lyons, who, although he doesn't have any lines, performs a very difficult part incredibly convincingly especially for one so young (I won't elaborate or it really would be a spoiler).

However this can be forgiven, because as the film draws to a close you may feel a bit thankful for the amount of time you have vested in this family. She makes a lot of stupid, irrational decisions, but we are reminded that she is only human and prone to mistakes. As the young pair grow ever closer, Charlie's mother (Morton) becomes increasingly concerned for her sick boy and obsessive in her quest to shelter him from harm. For me it was an hour and twenty minutes well spent and I will be definitely recommending it to friends and family and of course to all you kind souls bothering to read my take on this truly underrated movie. He reminded us what real-life horror looks like with HENRY, now brings you a all new psychological horror film entitled: The Harvest.
