I think the battle in volumes 33-34 must be the most impressive one I've ever in seen in a visual narrative medium and it's unlikely for a film or a videogame to reach that kind of power and assurance.

The spirits pass Serpico and possess hounds that Guts fights off before killing a possessed horsed as it was about to rape a horrified Farnese. While Nina reunites with Joachim, Farnese renounces her faith and decides to follow Guts with Serpico remaining by her side. Serpico retrieves a traumatized Farnese and escorts her back to their camp, allowing Guts a reprieve despite Farnese's demand to have him killed. He finds his Behelit and unintentionally activates it when the Hawks find him as a solar eclipse occurs, taking everyone present to a convergence of the physical and Astral planes.The series is a beautiful work, I especially love the authors use of two page panels(actually why I went for physical copy) and I'd put his line work on par with junji ito. Guts succeeds, but is emotionally scarred when he killed the noble's young son Adonis to conceal the deed. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan made, ranging from statues and action figures, to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. You could stick to the first 14 volumes because that does constitute a great story but it would be an infuriatingly open ended one.

After the Egg flees the Skull Knight with only a mortal wound inflicted on him, the Skull Knight takes Luca to safety as the living mounds of starved corpses rise up.Those chapters have the most ill advised comic relief; they keep the books running far longer than they need to (more on that later) and keeping you from the most exciting main plotlines.

BERSERK Deluxe 1 contains the first 3 Volumes and is the introductory phase of this epic, more or less beginning halfway through the timeline of the whole plot.Joachim gradually engages until learning that the pagans are cannibals and tries to flee, falling off a cliff. Everything in between is pretty much a rollercoaster whirl of violence, rude bits, philosophical waffle and some of the darkest themes ever to (dis)grace the media and not get banned.

This is a moving and funny debut novel set in a quirky coastal community you will be desperate to visit after reading. I was curious about Berserk 8 years ago and I was put off by the number of volumes and had reservations about the art style but last year I found out what I was missing out on. While Luca and Isidro use Jerome to free Nina, Guts forces Farnese to take him to the torture chamber where Puck tells that Casca is trapped within the blood as it is pursuing Mozgus and his men before they are transformed by the observer.
