About this deal

And then there is Margaret’s black comic embarrassment-ordeal of growing up: the boys, the training bras and the sanitary towels. However, she changed her mind when the director Kelly Fremon Craig promised to be faithful to the story. She relies on her mother, Barbara (Rachel McAdams), who is also struggling to adjust to life outside the big city, and her adoring grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), who isn’t happy they moved away – and likes to remind them every chance she gets. For all three, questions of identity, one’s place in the world, and what brings meaning to a life will draw them closer together than ever before.

At 11, Margaret is moving to a new town and beginning to contemplate everything about life, friendship, and adolescence. The movie is played as a 1970 historical piece rather than being updated to the modern world, which would of course require LGBTQ+ plot additions, though I suspect a completely original drama of this sort set in 1970 would not tacitly consent, as this does, to the invisibility of gay people. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Kelly Fremon Craig's talented storytelling, combined with outstanding performances from the talented cast, makes this film a must-watch for audiences of all ages. She relies on her mother, who offers loving support, and her grandmother, who's coming to terms with finding happiness. The film follows the journey of Margaret Simon, portrayed with remarkable aplomb by Abby Ryder Fortson, as she navigates the challenges of adolescence in the picturesque suburbs of New Jersey. Within this comedic framework, the film conveys poignant messages about tolerance, empathy, and the importance of embracing one's individuality, all while providing genuine moments of self-discovery and personal growth. Based on the beloved novel of the same name by Judy Blume, published in 1970, if this cinematic adaptation is accurate to the book, then I'd love to read it.Among other shows and movies, Gracie Films is responsible for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (1970-77), "Jerry McGuire" (1996), and "As Good as it Gets" (1997).

Fans of "The Simpsons" especially will note the Gracie Films logo at the beginning of the film, used at the end of episodes of the aforementioned television show. Audio descriptions (AD) refer to a narration track describing what is happening on screen to provide context for those who are blind or have low vision. It was the ostensibly serious, religious nature of the novel that no doubt allayed the fears of school librarians and teachers back in 1970, and allowed Blume her admirable candour in addressing sexual themes; I myself kept waiting for God to “reply” with some epiphanic moment of divine revelation, the sun coming out from behind a cloud at a key point.
