Tomita went as far as to accompany the film crew in the Philippines, but label contracts ultimately prevented his involvement. The character is named for George Lucas, who had directed Ford in American Graffiti and Star Wars, and with whom Coppola had founded American Zoetrope in 1969. Willard, like Marlow, becomes more perceptive to the moral darkness around him as the film proceeds. Accordingly the isolation of the man-god is quite as necessary for the safety of others as for his own. Al Pacino was also offered the role, but he too did not want to be away that long, and was afraid of falling ill in the jungle as he had done in the Dominican Republic during the shooting of The Godfather Part II.
