About this deal

Tomita went as far as to accompany the film crew in the Philippines, but label contracts ultimately prevented his involvement. Given unprecedented access to the film’s stars, extras, crew, and legendary behind-the-scenes drama he spent six months in the Philippines, shooting thousands of images. Duvall said that he found that the version of the character was too over-the-top, and asked Coppola permission to change the character.

For a list of the rest of the cast members not included in the 153-minute version of the film that was released in theaters, see Apocalypse Now Redux § Cast. Willard finds Lance, leads him back to the PBR, and they depart back down the river, away from Kurtz’s outpost. Also, the production had bodyguards watching constantly at night and one day the entire payroll was stolen. After photography was finally finished in May 1977, the release was postponed several times while Coppola edited over a million feet of film. In his review for the Los Angeles Times, Charles Champlin wrote: 'as a noble use of the medium and as a tireless expression of national anguish, it towers over everything that has been attempted by an American filmmaker in a very long time. Although inspired by Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, the film deviates extensively from its source material. The character may also have been partially inspired by the British-Australian photojournalist Tim Page. It didn't seem to make much sense but I was pleasantly surprised to find that everything made sense and tied up well at the end.

Here, generously illustrated with evocative stills from the film and revealing photographs from the set, is the story behind the movie where Vietnam met Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.

The character is named for George Lucas, who had directed Ford in American Graffiti and Star Wars, and with whom Coppola had founded American Zoetrope in 1969. The helicopter attack scene with the Ride of the Valkyries soundtrack was chosen as the most memorable film scene ever by Empire magazine. The movie took years to be filmed and edited, and was the subject of endless stories, rumors, and speculation. There is a great section on the different cuts of the film, including a look at the 5 hour rough cut. Their willingness to go all the way terrifies their superiors, who do not want to be so blatantly reminded of their real goals (ivory in the Heart of Darkness and power in Apocalypse Now) and methods of attaining them.

In the DVD commentary, Coppola explains that the images of explosions were not intended as part of the story, but were simply a graphic background he had added for the credits. Willard, like Marlow, becomes more perceptive to the moral darkness around him as the film proceeds. Accordingly the isolation of the man-god is quite as necessary for the safety of others as for his own. Al Pacino was also offered the role, but he too did not want to be away that long, and was afraid of falling ill in the jungle as he had done in the Dominican Republic during the shooting of The Godfather Part II. Rumors began to circulate that Apocalypse Now had several endings, but Richard Beggs, who worked on the sound elements, said, "There were never five endings, but just the one, even if there were differently edited versions".Then we know that Kurtz, as a king of his tribe, cannot afford to die a slow natural death, but must be killed before he is so weak as to affect the people, cattle and crops of the Montagnards. Here, generously illustrated with evocative stills from the film and revealing photographs from the set, is the story behind the movie where Vietnam met Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Baxter's support characters are also well written and often have a hidden layer that you don't expect to be there.
