About this deal

Boys on bikes fly past her as she walks to the beach, and a mysterious, attractive boy in a hoodie—her future love interest Eli—nearly bumps into her.

I was the kind of kid that people always sighed over and said, "She has such a wild imagination," which usually meant "I wish Sarah would try to stick to the truth. It's really hard not to fall head over heels in love with a Dessen bookthere's just so much stuff to grasp, to learn, and to relate to.It gets the reader to consider relationships among family members and friends, as well as how people can or cannot change.

Although her head is there, the author’s name is printed in gigantic bold letters right over her face.

On the other hand, book Auden took some time to come to terms with the fact that her parents’ divorce (and their personalities) forced her to grow up too fast, leading her to miss out on various experiences including close friendships. She describes her writin They remind me of an ensemble cast from a TV show -- one that's perfectly chosen and flawlessly acted. I’ve always struggled to gauge someone’s tone through text, but books like Along for the Ride are an exception to that. She dated Eli's brother, Jake, for most of high school, and they were in a rough patch when Auden came to town and hooked up with Jake on her first night in Colby.

But such a breezy, Instagram-friendly adaptation feels like a betrayal to Dessen’s original, neurotic protagonist, who has a more difficult journey from self-induced solitude to romance. Maggie finds out that Auden and Jake had sex behind the sand dunes at The Tip, but she decides it is for the best and the two become friends. In the summer between her senior year and her freshman year of college, Auden has to make a choice: stay with her busy mother who is more focused on her grad students than she is on Auden, or go to her dad’s new seaside home in Colby and hang out there for a few months. The closing scene is of Auden rereading a postcard from Eli in Barcelona before she and Maggie, college roommates, head to lunch. Eli has this great back story of why he's the typical brooding-mysterious-hot-coveted guy we all know so much, but, as I mentioned above, it could have been done better. Auden begins to see that Heidi is not just a trophy wife, but rather a kind person and savvy businesswoman. There's an underlying theme of girls enjoying fashion, expressing individuality, and having goals; also, girls are presented as athletic as boys. I bought it because the movies on Netflix was sweet and I wanted to know how the actual book was, but Lord I wanted to shake the hell out of the narrator the entire time.

When she goes to visit her father's new family in the beach town of Colby for the summer, Auden finds herself in a whole new world.Auden's mother's romantic life is never mentioned in the movie, aside from a comment she makes about never wanting to get married again. Both of them are feminists with internalized misogyny, with Auden inheriting her mother’s tendency to look down on women who are too “girly”. As far as my other life, my non-writing life, I live in the country with my husband, some lizards, and two dogs who are completely spoiled and rule me completely. She's a master storyteller when it comes to writing about everyday life, and her characters are always so well-crafted and layered. The carichtors are developing and changing during the book, and the ending is a kind of new begining for everyone.
