About this deal

Do fashion it if you don’t have an old one, wear it, the plain red and white entwined strings, before your feet even touch the ground on the morning of the 1st of March. Every year I share the story of the day with my friends and have little gifts for my dear women friends. It carries within its heart of hearts the positive energy of a new year, of a season that’s just been reborn, but also a drop of love from the giver to the receiver. Almost each region had a different time frame for how long it should be kept, varying from 2–3 days in the Iași region of Moldavia, up to 2–3 months in the Vâlcea region of Oltenia. Keep in mind that most Romanian women expect to receive something at the beginning of March (especially on March 1) - either a traditional mărțișor or its more expensive version, a piece of jewellery with a red-white string, or a flower from the most important men in their lives, as well as from colleagues and business partners. Everything went sad: birds did not sing anymore, springs were not flowing, children did not laugh anymore. He had a double role: both protector of agriculture and of war, so the celebration signified the rebirth of nature. Then… they would tie the Martisor thread to a white rose or a blossomed tree, bearer of fruit, for good luck.

The children even forgot their games, and even how to be happy, for no one was cheerful around them anymore, to show them how to smile. The red is said to represent the summer and the heat, while the white represents the winter and the cold. Some women choose to wear the mărţişor all March as it is believed that the one who wears the red and white string will be strong and healthy in the coming year. Similar customs include the Martenitsa, celebrated by Bulgarians, and Martinka by Macedonians, while other communities such as Albanians, Turks from the Ohrid region, Greeks from Northern Greece, the isles of Rhodes, Dodecanese and Karpathos, the Gagauz people, and the Diaspora of these populations also practice local variations of the custom. Women in Romania are also celebrated on March 8 - the day when, as a sign of respect and gratitude, they receive flowers and symbolic gifts from the men in their lives.Others say that Mărțișor, the folk name of the month of March, hears that Dochia is spreading bad rumours and injuries about him, so he is borrowing two frosty days from Faur (the month of February) to punish the defiant old lady. Later these ornaments were shaped to resemble various images such as four-leaf clover, ladybug, snowdrop etc. The maiden was released and she ran back into the sky, almost instantly (had she thanked her saviour? Babele days are counted differently from one region to another, For instance, in Muntenia, there are 12 babe, while in Maramureș there is the old custom of “door knocking” to chase winter away.

Day after day he witnessed rainbows smiling over streams, birds joining in song, and flowers blooming everywhere. A unique and ingenious handmade accessory will make your grandma’s heart sing with joy, while little girls will love the cute, colorful figurines.

The word Mărțișor is the diminutive of marț, the old folk name for March ( martie, in modern Romanian), and literally means "little March". Martisor (Mărțișor) is a celebration at the beginning of spring, on March 1st, in Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria. The chimney sweep martisor, which is a small figurine of a chimney sweep tied with the red and white string, is among the martisoare most sought by Romanians, as it is said that the chimney sweep brings good luck.
