About this deal

Roberts is the pretty smart girl, no stretch for her there, though there are some scenes where she rises above and creates some decent character here.

Having not seen Flatliners in many years, I was curious as to just what my reaction to it was going to be. The film’s "near-death experiences" do take more advantage of the surrounds, delivering ethereal, other-worldly effects to envelope the viewer, and they move nicely through the speakers. Flatliners joins the many films of my youth which I perceived as terrifying that are, in fact, not as chilling as once believed.Detail has been cleaned up, colors seem to have a bit more pop and the dark levels (lest we forget, this is a pretty dark film) seem a lot better balanced. In Visions of Light (2022, 18 minutes), cinematographer Jan de Bont and chief lighting technician Edward Ayer talk about the aggressive lighting design and expression of themes and storytelling through color. that this tendency toward the very warm end of the spectrum is only increased courtesy of HDR and/or Dolby Vision. To see if there is life after death, they will kill themselves: temporarily shut down ("flatline") their heart and brain functions to briefly experience clinical death.

Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt as aspiring yet daring medical students commiting reckless experiments with death create likable, fairly three-dimensional characters in what essentially amounts to B-grade material with no apparent condescension or irony.Elmo’s Fire) tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die? First up is the psychological horror thriller Flatliners from Arrow Video, a film which features a who’s who of talent (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and William Baldwin) in a story of life and death, gods and monsters, regret and atonement. Sound effects in the lab sequences can creep to the rears, as do the sounds that pop up during the film’s few jump scares. That said, I love the notion that these four aren’t really haunted by anything at all beyond their own subconscious unaddressed traumas, making Flatliners never concretely deal with the supernatural, but lean hard on the philosophical. Yes, we’d seen Kiefer Sutherland in previous movies like Stand by Me and The Lost Boys but who was this other Baldwin brother?

Still, the plot's central conceit is both its blessing and its curse, setting up really high expectations only to reveal itself as some kind of old-fashioned morality play. Flatliners is one of those early 90s films with one foot still in the 80s, directed beautifully by the master of neon camp Joel Schumacher and starring the epitome of late80s/early 90s mega film stars triptic of Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts (along with Oliver Platt and William Baldwin). Flatliners has a great premise and largely runs with it, but the script by Peter Filardi ( The Craft) could easily have benefitted from a few darker turns.

Approaching the question from different angles and trying to gain a fresh view on the possible afterlife, Flatliners is one that always springs to mind, and not just because of the 90s resurgence period we are going through. Courtesy of Arrow Video, this 4K Ultra HD release arrives with a highly-attractive Dolby Vision video, a pair of strong DTS-HD MA options and a healthy, exclusive selection of bonuses. A very nice release though I do think it would have been nice to get the arrow limited edition release nice rigid case but hey just glad to get flatliners on 4K.

the like, and it maybe has a slightly more "video" like quality in this 4K UHD version, though detail levels are still excellent. Stylishly photographed by Jan de Bont (Basic Instinct) and featuring a cast of Hollywood's hottest talent - including Kiefer Sutherland (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me), Julia Roberts (Secret in their Eyes) and Kevin Bacon (Wild Things) - Flatliners is the ultimate life-and-death thrill ride.

Medical students experiment on "near death" experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their lives. The review copy sent to EoM is not the retail edition, so there’s no way to speak on the booklet or art with any kind of authority.
