Swallow feels that through her creation and maintenance of the armor, the Armorer is effectively the keeper of their history and rituals, [5] [61] [63] because "she actually has a record based on what it is that she's made". [61] That role is even more important at the time of The Mandalorian, Swallow said, since much of the Mandalorian society has been suppressed and destroyed by the Empire. The Armorer plays a relatively small role in the first season of The Mandalorian, but an important one, repeatedly setting the title character on the correct path of his hero's journey. [1] She is the leader of the Mandalorian tribe, [3] [4] providing guidance and direction to a clan that has lost its way after the now fallen Empire persecuted them. [24] [52] [53] She does so by reminding them of their moral code and set of values, [5] [54] and encouraging them to regard each other as a family. [52] [53] The Armorer is the first person in the series to say "This is the Way", which serves as a credo for the Mandalorian clan, and is repeated throughout the first season. [55] She believes strongly in Mandalorian traditions, [5] [50] and is dedicated to ensuring the survival of her tribe, [24] [37] serving as their spiritual leader and as their armorer. [7] [37] [56] The scene she read in her audition was a variation of the scene in "Chapter 3: The Sin" in which she breaks up a fight among members of the Mandalorian clan, [49] [86] [87] though the final scene was changed slightly when adapted to television. [83] Her audition dialogue included the Armorer's line "This is the Way", which would become one of the most popular lines of the series. [49] [86] The casting company made clear the character would be masked, in case some actors opposed having their faces concealed. [88] [89] Swallow previously did mask training in graduate school acting classes at New York University Tisch School of the Arts, [5] [88] [90] but this marked the first time she had used the training on television, [88] [91] [92] which she called an interesting challenge. [49] [88] [93] Favreau believed Swallow's mask training was evident in her performance. [91] Composer Ludwig Göransson was recommended by several of his previous collaborators to Favreau, including directors Ryan Coogler and Anthony and Joe Russo, and musician Donald Glover. Favreau knew that music would be important to the series due to the impact of John Williams' score on the Star Wars films, but also wanted the music of the series to be different from the films. He wanted the series to sound "a little grittier, a little edgier and a little more tech-oriented". [73] Göransson first met with Favreau in November 2018, [74] when Favreau showed the composer concept art for the series and discussed his inspirations for the story and tone, including Western and samurai films. They also discussed how they felt when they first heard Williams' Star Wars music, and Göransson set out to recreate those feelings and "capture the soul of what Star Wars is" but in a new way. [75]

It’s the closest most of us will get to looking like Pedro Pascal.

The Kuiil and IG-11 scenes also demonstrate that how the "child" character is raised makes a significant difference in whether the child becomes an asset or a threat to those around him. The droid was a dangerous assassin before Kuiil reprogrammed him, but thanks to the Ugnaught's parenting, he becomes a protector and helper instead. [83] Some writers have likewise suggested the Child is not inherently good or evil, [99] [102] but that instead, like all children, he is impressionable and does not fully understand the events occurring around him. He is learning about the world around him and needs guidance as he develops his abilities. [96] [99] [103] It will largely fall to the Mandalorian to provide this guidance, [96] as when the Mandalorian stops him from strangling Cara Dune. [99] Schneider, Michael (February 3, 2021). [3] It was often difficult to move in it, [3] and the helmet provided very little peripheral vision. [2] [114] [115] Even simply walking across the room was difficult because of the limited visibility, and because Swallow could not look down, she often feared she was going to trip, [3] [102] though her character's deliberately slow walking pace helped avoid doing so. [114] [116] [117] Swallow said: "I'm really glad that it looks as dignified and impressive as it does, because being inside of it feels ridiculous". [118] She and the other Mandalorian actors would occasionally bump into each other, hit their helmets against each other, or trip over each other. [3] [115] [116] Swallow said: "I really hope that at some point they release a bloopers reel, because when you put like two or more Mandalorians in a room together, chaos ensues". Retrieved February 2, 2022.In November 2018, Pedro Pascal was confirmed to be portraying the Mandalorian after being rumored to be cast in the role for some time. [7] Pascal initially thought he was being cast as the Star Wars character Boba Fett due to the visual similarities between that character and the Mandalorian, [55] but the latter is a separate character named Din Djarin. [8] Favreau called Pascal "a classic movie star" who "had the presence and skill[s]" necessary to portray a character largely concealed under a helmet. [56] The Mandalorian is also portrayed by stunt doubles Brendan Wayne, Lateef Crowder, [10] and Barry Lowin. [57] Pascal worked with Favreau and Filoni to record the character's dialogue later. [58] [56] Lucasfilm announced a publishing campaign of tie-in books and comics for the series in June 2020. The campaign was announced to include The Art of The Mandalorian (Season One) by Phil Szostak, an original adult novel written by Adam Christopher and published by Del Rey Books, a visual guide written by Pablo Hidalgo and published by DK, a junior novelization of the first season written by Joe Schreiber, and comic books inspired by the series to be published by Marvel Comics and IDW. [161] One month later, the novel by Christopher was delayed from December 2020 to November 2021, before both it and the visual guide by Hidalgo was canceled in March 2021. [162] [163] Hidalgo stated in December 2021 that the publishing program had been put on hold to avoid any potential contradictions or restrictions that may have arisen between the published material and the spin-off series in development.
