Ghost Stories is a cooperative game in which the players protect the village from incarnations of the lord of hell - Wu-Feng - and his legions of ghosts before they haunt a town and recover the ashes that will allow him to return to life. Each Player represents a Taoist monk working together with the others to fight off waves of ghosts.

Survivors can use anything they can get their hands on to eliminate the zombie threat; the bigger the weapon, the more zombies can be killed. Trade equipment, give, receive and ignore advice, and even perform the Ultimate Sacrifice to save the world. Items offer equipment you can use to explore or defend yourself. Events use dice to add or reduce your ‘life energy levels’ (i.e. your might, speed, knowledge, or sanity). Omens offer ‘numbered gifts’ so you have to roll the dice to keep your omen. This board game has great artwork, high quality pieces, and optional expansions that increase options, depth, and complexity of the game. They encounter people, place creatures which are both mundane and normal. The investigators undergo a series of adventures and gain the clues and resources they require to confront and thwart the Mythos threat in the final phase. While still a thematically dark game, everything is brighter and more vibrant, making it easier to distinguish what icons mean and what is going on in the game. That’s an important thing to have as the game is all about knowing what icons mean and when they take effect. Most are easy to decipher, but some can be a bit confusing, but never fear, there is a thorough appendix for all of the icons so you can know exactly what does what, and when it does it. Very well put together both in presentation and in graphic design. The addition of miniatures, while a fantastic tactile and display addition, can make it a bit difficult to see what the powers are on the tiles, but once you learn the tiles, you don’t have to look so hard and can just enjoy that you have a plastic ranger figure shooting two directions from the middle of the board. Since it is a cooperative game, you have to strategize with your teammates and make sure that all enemies are defeated. You either win or lose together. Everyone wants to help each other make the correct guesses because if everyone guesses their suspect, location and item before the end of the 7th turn, the group can have a guess at the final culprit! You need two valuable attributes to win this game: teamwork and support. These are vital because you don’t get to see your cards. Instead, they can only be seen by your teammates, who have to give you clues regarding their colors and numbers. White is a ‘wild color’ and can be used as any color – if you only roll two red and a white, that white transforms into a red, allowing the successful exorcism.

All of the stories within the series are interrelated. This does not mean, however, that you cannot play the Desert if you have not played the others. This game has endless replay-ability, with different enemies that require different strategies to defeat and constant new challenges. It's rated for players 13 and up, and takes up to an hour to play.Ghost Stories doesn’t play quite like other cooperative games you may have run into like Pandemic and Hanabi. There are similarities, but Ghost Stories amps up the difficulty a lot. Every decision you make is critical, and this makes the game a lot of fun. It’s a hard one to figure out, really, and I’ve run into a lot of games where it took everybody chipping in their ideas as to what players should do.
