About this deal

A friend mentioned that matcha was caffeinated and it had loads of other health benefits. Obviously, this sounded way too good to be true but when I did try it, it really had a almost life changing effect on me." JD: You recently received GBP50,000 from the UK investor TV show Dragons’ Den. What’s that cash being used for and any plans for further funding rounds? We're so proud to pioneer this better-for-you way to fuel your day, and we can't wait for you all to try them if you haven't already!

But after finding the perfect matcha, the last thing they wanted to do was add a bunch of preservatives and sweeteners to create their on–the–go option. Thankfully, they were able to find a treatment that allows them to make shelf–stable tea and lattes with only three items each—water, matcha, and agave for tea or oat milk for lattes. Mr Bartlett said that “once in a while, you have entrepreneurs come into the den that you just have a huge degree of admiration for. And the journey you’re on as young entrepreneurs is a similar journey that I’ve been on as well.” We’re kind of in a fortunate position where we actually have a side of our business, which is our matcha powder. It’s a very profitable business. So, we’re fortunate to be able to fund a lot of our drink’s activities through our powder. The business model helps sustain us. But further funding, it’s something that we have been considering, so TBD. JD: How much of the business is selling matcha powder? PerfectTed’s three-strong range is made using00% natural ingredients, with no additives, preservatives or added sugar MP: We’re trying to decide whether or not a US launch makes sense for us at the moment. I think we see such a massive opportunity to continue gaining market share in the UK, and as well throughout Europe, the Middle East and south-east Asia. The US is such a massive market and it’s what I’m very familiar with as an American and have a lot of friends within the drinks industry there but I think right now there’s so much to go after here that we’re not really focused on the US.

Dragons are slayed by young energy drink entrepreneurs

If you’ve ever tried to make matcha at home, you might have started with a store–bought mix. It was probably a yellow–green color and contained additives and sweeteners. If it didn’t have sugar in it already, you probably wanted to add a few spoonfuls to mask the grassy flavor. Unfortunately, this is pretty common in lower–grade matcha—it can be incredibly bitter in its natural state. I thought it would help increase my mental alertness and just give me consistent energy levels throughout the day, but I often found I was just experiencing horrible side effects like jitters, crashes, exacerbated anxiety symptoms. With 60mg of caffeine per can, our PerfectTed Matcha Energy will challenge traditional energy drinks using an entirely plant-based recipe, free of additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. One thing we've learnt, specifically producing a physical product, is that every day is a disaster," Teddie added.

All drinks are less than 60 calories and abundant in naturally occurring amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Marisa is responsible for advertising and marketing, Teddie for operations and sales, and Levi, also a UCS alumni, for the financial side of the business, making them the perfect team – or make that perfect match(a).

PerfectTed, made up of Hampstead brothers Levi and Teddie and New Yorker Marisa, to appear on Dragons' Den to pitch their matcha energy drink, already being sold in Tesco (Image: PerfectTed) The caffeine from green tea lasts 4 to 6 hours, versus 1 to 2 hours from coffee or other energy drinks; the l-theanine in matcha regulates the absorption of caffeine into the body, helping to avoid the jitters and post-caffeine crash. PerfectTed wanted to go directly to the source. Buying directly from farmers in Uji, Japan, allows the company to maintain a closer relationship with its suppliers and avoid the inflated prices that come with going through multiple wholesalers. It also helps the founders ensure that farmers are compensated fairly and that the products are grown in the best conditions. Brothers Teddie and Levi originally began their foray into beverage making early in the pandemic, in an effort to support local health care workers. They bought a juice press and sold drinks from a stand in their neighborhood in London, which made them realize the importance of building a business that also has a social impact. They describe how would batch-make big jugs to get them through a busy week but needed a high quality on-the-go solution to stay energised.

Speaking to The Mirror, the group shared what they believe helped them in the Den, and secrets of the show viewers might be unaware of - including the very short notice they had. 'We were told only five days in advance' In the first collaboration between media outlets from different faiths, Jewish News worked with British Muslim TV and Church Times to produce a list of young activists leading the way on interfaith understanding.

She added the Tesco listing also made the natural energy drink “readily accessible nationwide and marking yet more rapid growth for our business”. In an age when news is readily accessible, Jewish News provides high-quality content free online and offline, removing any financial barriers to connecting people. PerfectTed is a canned energy drinks’ range with matcha green tea, that was founded by 3 housemates/best friends, Marisa Poster, and Teddie and Levi Levenfiche. MP: When we looked around at a lot of brands that we really loved on the market like Deliciously Ella, Jimmy’s Iced Coffee, Nutty Bruce, loads of brands have names in them. Available in three unique flavour combinations (Pear Ginger, Apple Raspberry, and Pineapple Yuzu), the team sources its single origin, organic, ceremonial grade matcha from Uji, Japan. This premium quality matcha features a sweet, umami flavour, and a bright green hue (unlike poorer substitutes – which can be bitter, grassy, and insoluble).

The fastest growing businesses in the North of England in 2023

It has since gained listings in 3,000 distribution points, including 600 Holland & Barrett stores, Whole Foods and Planet Organic, as well as M&S sushi counters and food-to-go operators such as Joe & the Juice.
