Rega's Elex-R arrived in 2014, 13 years after the original Elex, which was the company's second-ever amplifier following its debut Elicit the year prior. The new Brio has a cleverly integrated headphone socket specially designed to avoid interference with the audio circuit when not in use and as you would expect, a very high specification moving magnet phono stage is built in as standard. Before I bought the well regarded and highly valued Rega Brio-R, I've been mostly listening to amplifiers made by big Japanese companies. As with the Elicit and Brio siblings, its biggest strength lies in its effortless, uncompromising musicality; it's the kind of product that gets straight to the heart of the music and conveys all the emotion in the recording with ease. No well made amplifier (and a great many mediocre amplifiers as it happen) should have any sound/buzz/fuzz/hum at any level under those conditions.

The closest the company has got to building a production version of the Naiad – closer still than after the Planar 8 that came just before it – it's an exceptional performer that packs clever engineering and fine build into a visually striking design. To say we were impressed by the RP8 - which is still available, by the way - would be an understatement. I have never owned an amp in 40 years that had 0 hum at zero volume setting (both solid state and tube, never mind which input) if you pressed your ear against the speaker (but it could not be heard from a foot or two feet away). That partial-cure was as simple as reversing the leads to the filaments - leading me to believe that the buzz was inductive - which it was.
