About this deal

The Calico character creator will allow players to create their own magical person to experience the world through. There will also be plenty of clothing to choose from and collect throughout the game! If you fail to complete a design goal tile, there is no penalty (other than not receiving extra points). Cat Scoring Tiles & Tokens Beth Sobel’s illustrations are stunning, steeped with a level of detail that makes the feline friends – Coconut, Leo, Millie, and the rest of the gang – even more realistic. You’ll definitely want them on your quilt, that’s for sure! But how do you attract them? Read on to find out. The Aim of the Game You can earn buttons thanks to the colors on your patch tiles. To sew on a button, you must first make a group of three or more patch tiles of the same color. The shape of this group doesn’t matter. Players work on building their beautiful quilts in ways which achieve victory points. For example, if by placing a tile, a player is able to connect at least three patches of the same colour, they can sew a colour co-ordinated button onto any one of those matching patches and that is worth 3 points at the end of the game. Indeed, get a button of each of the six available colours and the rainbow bonus token is yours!

If the game ends in a tie, the player with the most button tokens takes the victory. The winner earns the “Master Quilter” badge. Variations Cat scoring tiles are double-sided and give Calico some additional setup variety. One side allows players to earn a cat token for groups of matching pattern tiles, while the other side requires those tiles to be in specific arrangements. However, don’t be fooled by the game’s apparent simplicity! Beneath the surface, it’s quite complex – there’s certainly more than meets the eye, which is why it’s often described as under-promising and over-delivering.

Fit to Print

In the game, you can also enjoy the story mode campaign. An extraordinary world inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli awaits you. Here cats have great power and influence over people's lives. Take on the role of an itinerant quilter who decides to succeed in a city of cat-worshippers. Climb to the top of the city hierarchy and face the opponent who wants to dominate the world of humans and cats. Create quilts, perfect your craft, and help those you meet on your journey. Don't worry, you won't be alone - along the way, you'll meet friends and, most importantly, cats whose help can prove invaluable… The lower blue points just need colour or pattern. So in the AA-BB-CC example, so long as you have e.g. 2 blue + 2 yellow + 2 green patches or 2 stripes + 2 spots + 2 ferns, you’ll have achieved that objective and will score 7 points at end game! Button It, Kitty

The patterns depicted on your patch tiles have the potential to attract cats to your quilt. This is because each cat has two preferred patterns per game, and each cat has a preferred tile group size or shape they want the patterns to be in. As your turns pass, you’ll be building your quilt in the same way as in multiplayer mode – having one eye on achieving colour based button and pattern connected cat bonuses, and the other on achieving the design goal tiles! Thankfully with nobody else playing, you won’t need a third eye to factor in hate-drafting opportunities! Solo Good Similarly, if patch placement has secured a pattern sequence printed on any of the cat cards, a little cat token can cosy up onto one of the relevant tiles on that player’s quilt and will score the relevant number of victory points shown on the corresponding card (and underneath the token itself). Play it just right and it is even possible to pull off killer-combo moves gaining cats, buttons, and goals in a single turn; enough point booty to make even the greatest Street Fighter fan weep into their bandaged hands! If you can also (or alternatively) connect at least three patches of the same colour, you can sew (add) a colour co-ordinated button onto any one of those matching patches which is worth 3 points at end game. Indeed, get a button of each of the six available colours and the rainbow bonus token is yours!

System Requirements

Calico is certainly an unusual board game, and in many ways, it’s much like marmite; you either love it or hate it. There are also other achievements set out in the rule book (minimum scores and rule restrictions) which aren’t listed as being used in solo mode. But I often use them when playing alone if I am not in the mood to sit down to a full-blown scenario.
