The reason I suggest the this DVD over the others, is that its the only version to include an open matte version of the film, in addition to the standard 1. To my knowledge, they haven't released another version since then--unless you count releases of the same disc with multiple covers as a new version. Now, Evil Dead 2 has a pretty similar story, except Elite only issued their version on laser, and left all the DVDs to Anchor Bay. The only survivor, Ash (Bruce Campbell, who also starred in the first film), deranged after having to dismember his possessed, dead girlfriend, fights back with a chainsaw.

The matted widescreen and open matte transfers on the 2000 R1 US Anchor Bay Evil Dead II DVD are worth mentioning. I've read on another forum that the handful of awkward-framing instances in the widescreen version have been re-framed for this release. There are so many releases in countries around the world that it would take forever to list them all. TrueHD track, replaces the French dub with a Spanish one, and adds a third set of subtitles (making the always welcome distinction between standard English and SDH). There have been fewer issues of Evil Dead 2 in general, and we don't have the dual fullscreen/ widescreen thing going on (although Anchor Bay did once include an open matter version as a bonus on one of their old discs, possibly just out of habit).remixes, you are out of luck because like past releases, the original mono soundtrack is nowhere to be found. Update 7/11/15 - 10/15/18: If we're going to talk about the definitive Evil Dead experience, we can't leave out its top level format release. Anchor Bay released a bare-bones edition in 1999 followed by a now-discontinued special edition from Elite Entertainment.And it's hard to say which version looks better, either, as it seems to depend on the shot - some look better matted, some look better composed open. The film itself is transferred from the US Anchor Bay 2010 Blu-Ray release, painstakingly re-edited and synced to a number of previously released commentary tracks.
