About this deal

It can even emulate the Gamecube with some games running at a solid full frame rate. Thanks to Vulkan API support the emulators run more efficiently and as a result you get better speeds on your emulator and can play games as they were intended. In summary, EXCELLENT for Steam In-Home Streaming (AAAAND the new Steam Link app) or for nVidia GameSteam over Moonlight APK. Also good for most Emulators up to the fifth/sixth gen consoles. Migrating to a MediaTek SOC and doubling the ram/storage yields a snappy system with all-day battery life (I unplugged this at around 8am today and the battery was still at about 14% when I plugged it in after 8pm, using it heavily but sporadically throughout the day. 6000MaH is roughly 2x the battery capacity of a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, for context).

It couldn’t quite emulate all of the consoles that it boasted on the menu selection screen, and the build quality didn’t instil the same level of faith that you get when whipping out your 3DS and cruising through your best Nintendo 3DS games. Navigate to “ GPD_EN-images-v1.07_20171228user” folder, then “ images”, and choose the “ MT8173_Android_scatter.txt ” file. It may take a few seconds for the data to load and you will see similar to the below image. If the OS stays current and the gameplay smooth, then this will be an absolute beauty to play. The original XD Plus came with MT8176+PowerVR Hexa-core processor, 4GB RAM and 32Gb Storage, which twinned with the right OS would make for the kind of super-smooth play that dreams are made of. We think that we might see the RAM increased to 8GB as stated above if the info we have is true and the storage increased to at least 64GB for holding all of your favourite titles. Console Emulation While the GPD XD is an excellent way to play Android games, its focus is undeniably retro in nature. It runs pretty much every emulator on the Google Play market flawlessly, with only the Saturn emulator uoYabause proving problematic – and that can hardly be considered the fault of the system, as that particular app is still very early in development. 8 and 16-bit consoles are replicated nigh-on perfectly here, with the NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PC Engine, Game Boy and Master System all running at full speed with sound. Moving into the 32-bit era, PlayStation emulation is near-faultless, as is N64.Overall, the design of the GPD XD Plus is pretty good. It is made out of high-quality parts. Some people will think that it is a bit clustered and even looks a bit outdated, but others are fine with it. The best feature, and the most obvious, is that 5” screen. This thing is bright, has good quality images, and it works extremely well at night. It is built to display the nostalgic colors of older games. The console is powered by a meaty 6000mAH battery, which gives you around 8 hours of continuous play time if you’re running emulators. Naturally, the more demanding the emulation the lower the stamina is going to be, but overall we were impressed with the staying power of the GPD XD. Even with a lot of use, we managed to get a few days out of it before the battery needed a top-up. Should I buy the GamePad Digital GPD XD? GPD XD is an Android-based handheld game console produced by the Chinese company GamePad Digital, released in late 2015. [1] It is similar in form to a Nintendo 3DS XL, [2] has a single, capacitive touch-screen, and is optimized for running emulators and other native Android software. It was succeeded by the GPD XD Plus, which has a smoother hinge and runs on Android 7. Of course, the counter argument to this is that a great many classic games are unavailable due to licensing issues or the fact that their publisher no longer exists; it’s most definitely a grey area and if you have even the slightest quibble about the legality and morality of emulation then the GPD XD is clearly not going to be the device for you. It is also possible to expand the storage further using a microSD card. Users can opt to use a microSDHC or microSDXC (which we highly reccomend) for increased speeds.

On paper and in practice, the XD Plus worked very well but felt a little underwhelming. This handheld should have been a game-changer, but to this day it still has that marmite ‘love-hate’ factor. With excitement building over both the N64 Mini and the Dreamcast Mini, people want their retro handhelds to be able to recreate their favourite home-console adventures of yesteryear with ease. Follow and accept any prompts to install the drivers. Please ignore any Install Failed error messages like the one below. Once the installation is complete, restart your PC.

Please Note

As an Android Gaming Tablet it also handles this very well. The GPD XD Plus supports the Vulkan API, it means apps are more optimised and run faster. It can run most systems from the 70’s up to the 2000’s Choose the flash_tool.exe application and wait a few moments for it to load. You can ignore any warning or error messages that may show. The GPD XD Plus runs on Nougat, which is already an outdated system that is being updated, but it won’t be updated for that much longer. Once the updates stop, it is going to be a really big problem unless they can come up with a solution. You may soon experience major frame rate drops and longer load times. Hopefully, they will come up with a way to stop this problem. First and foremost, this merchant was extremely responsive, replying to my messages the same night I wrote them. That is worth its weight in gold, I find, when dealing with any kind of embedded system and when dealing with import goods.

Personally we’re not a fan of this, but if the system is as open to modification as you would expect an Android handheld to be, you should be able to install an alternative launcher. The XP is reported to run Android 11. While it’s unknown what specific launcher GPD will use, from leaked screenshots it appears to be similar to the GPD XD Plus’s design. It can play most ROMs pretty well, but you will need to find the best possible emulation app that you can. The free ones on the app store probably aren’t going to cut it – you will need to pay for the app and then problem pay per ROM. The price is going to add up over time, on top of an already overly expensive device. Curiously as seen in the photographs, the GPD XP also features a camera in the bottom left screen of the unit. Whether or not this will make it into the final product remains to be seen however. It is going to be outdated and is overpriced, but there are certainly ways to work around it. There is a dedicated community for it.

Update: GPD have confirmed that the launcher is the “GPD Metro UI” launcher. Likely to be extremely similar if not identical to the launcher seen in the XD Plus/ I have not played N64 on it though I imagine it would run them quite well. (i dislike the graphics on that generation console) The GPD XD Plus measures 7.87 x 7.09 x 2.44 inches and features a 5 inch H-IPS display which is vibrant and clear. You can also connect a mini HDMI to HDMI cable to your TV and display the XD Plus on there. It is great for playing games and retro games on a large TV and transform it into an Android handheld game console. You can play your ROMs, but you will have trouble playing some of the best ones, which makes this a bit of a hard sell. You can connect to wireless controllers, which is a unique feature. The XP features a central screen flanked upon either side by hardware controls. Like the MOQI family, it is designed to merge the worlds of mobile gaming and hardcore gaming into a singular hybrid device that can “do it all”.
