About this deal

Gettys, Jim (22 June 2000). Lessons Learned about Open Source. USENIX Annual Technical Conference. Archived from the original on 27 June 2021. X11” is, strictly speaking, a communication protocol. In the sentences “X primarily defines protocol and graphics primitives …” and “X does not mandate the user interface …”, that's what X refers to. X is a family of protocols, X11 is the 11th version and the only one that's been in use in the last 25 years or so. XDMCP, twm (from the beginning known as Tom's window manager) brought in as standard window manager, application improvements, shape extension, new fonts. Neither marcdeop, nor tdawson, nor myself want to wind up having to commit to maintaining the Xorg server in any shape or form. Garfinkel, Simson L. (November–December 1988). "A Second Wind for Athena" (PDF). Technology Review . Retrieved 25 January 2016.

An X client itself may emulate an X server by providing display services to other clients. This is known as "X nesting". Open-source clients such as Xnest and Xephyr support such X nesting. The X Window System has nuanced usage of a number of terms when compared to common usage, particularly "display" and "screen", a subset of which is given here for convenience:I recently tried Wayland on Plasma again, and identified two showstoppers for me personally. The first was screen-sharing with Zoom, which I see some discussion of above / potential future workarounds. I don't see any discussion of supporting Zoom screen-sharing annotations (other people drawing on my screen) which is quite important to me as well (maybe this will "just work", but given all the complex bridges and so forth needed to make even basic sharing work, I doubt it). Uncomment – or add – the following lines (these items allow you to forward the traffic to your computer from the host): I also don't see any discussion of restoring window positioning when applications are restarted. This is especially problematic for applications like Chrome and IDEs like IntelliJ IDEA where these applications will routinely have 5-10 or more windows open, and each window is carefully positioned across desktops and screens, as well as within each screen.

In the second quarter of 1985, X acquired color support to function in the DEC VAXstation-II/GPX, forming what became version 9.X terminals explore the network (the local broadcast domain) using the X Display Manager Control Protocol to generate a list of available hosts that are allowed as clients. One of the client hosts should run an X display manager. Module: Modules can be loaded into the XServer at startup to facilitate things like fonts and 3D graphics. I would personally aim for: no (note: I don't have the authority on this). If you need X11, stay with the previous version of Fedora and likely the next one will have support for all your needs. e.g. "at minimum x11 should be around until ___, but likely we would not see plasma 6 being fully ready until ___ \" ... ___ could be in terms of very rough timeframes or Fedora release targets. This is not at all about committing to a timeline and instead just about approximating the correct scale of time (weeks, months, half year, longer, etc).
