About this deal

In fact, if you opt to have the F70 hardwired into your car, it can be almost completely forgotten about; it will just quietly get on with its job, and politely beep if you’re not paying attention at the traffic lights. As with most dash cams, the F70 also records audio, but this can be switched off. We imagine most buyers will opt to do this, as it can be uncomfortable knowing the camera is constantly recording your private conversations. Thinkware F70 review: Design

Although there is no dedicated night vision mode using infrared light, the F70 adjusts its video settings at night to boost brightness and reduce noise. Exposure is also adjusted automatically to counter strong sunlight and dark tunnels alike. After 5 minutes of trying and failing to peel the darn film off, I eventually conceded defeat and used a scraper blade to get the job done. Maybe it’s just me, but across the board, Thinkware dash cams always end up being the least straight-forward to mount. It’s a small, quite specific gripe, but one which can make the installation process that little bit more frustrating and time-consuming. Positioning the camera This is a bit of a pain when you just want to switch off audio recording, for example, or tweak the image brightness. But the benefit here is that the camera doesn’t have a display, so is smaller and less distracting than those that do. And, as with most dash cams, once you have gone through the effort of setting it up once, you never need touch it again - unless, of course, you need to retrieve the memory card and view footage on your computer. Thinkware F70 review: Verdict The F70 gives drivers an extended view of the road ahead, with a crisp, one channel 1080p full HD resolution and a wide 140-degree angle view. Also equipped with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology, the F70’s range covers a greater span between bright and the dark areas while driving. There isn’t a great deal to say here, and for many buyers that will be a good thing. There isn’t too much here to set up and configure, and there is less to distract the driver. THINKWARE designed the F70 with a simplistic, modern concept in mind. The F70 takes into consideration the drivers’ position, as well as the entire interior of the vehicle, with a design that fits discreetly on the front windshield to avoid impeding the driver and passenger view. The F70 offers various recording modes depending on your usage needs. When installed with a hard wire power cable, the camera switches to parking mode when the ignition is switched off, recording events triggered either by motion or impact detection. In normal parking mode it records 10 seconds before the sensor is triggered and 10 seconds after. If a car owner is going away on holiday or leaving the car for long periods of time, the F70 can be set to Energy Saving Parking Recording. This reduces current drain and puts the camera in sleep mode. When an impact is detected, the camera wakes up and records footage for 20 seconds. For protection when the vehicle is stopped, the F70 comes with Front Vehicle Departure Warning (FVDW). When waiting at an intersection or in traffic, drivers are informed that the vehicle in front of them has started to move, preventing a delayed response and a possible fender bender accident. The Thinkware F70 can be installed and used without any software at all, if you like. Most of the default settings, such as exposure and brightness, are perfectly acceptable, and all you really need to do is position the camera so it correctly captures the road ahead.

The F70 is one of the smaller dash cams on sale today. Where some camera can be bulky and take up a lot of space, this one is almost invisible once installed in the top-middle of your windscreen. The cylinder design is quite smart and subtle, and the mounting system is easy to use. The camera measures 78 x 34.6 x 31.5mm and weighs 42.4g; it should fit behind the rearview mirror of most vehicles. Consumer interest in dash cams has been growing globally and in North America currently, which makes it the perfect time for THINKWARE to introduce an affordable dash cam that offers the latest in-demand capabilities.” stated Brian Yang, THINKWARE’s General Manager of Global Business Development. “The THINKWARE F70 is a cost-effective option for consumers seeking high quality recordings with a wider-angle view of the road. I have a love-hate relationship with the mounting system that Thinkware uses in the F70 and X1000’s design. The slide-on mechanism to attach the camera to the mount is perfectly simple and effective, but adhering the mount to the windscreen is something which Thinkware devices always frustrate me with. The reason being is that they use a type of 3M adhesive which has a protective film that is anything but easy-peel. Admittedly, my nails are practically non-existent, but even still, it’s an oddly arduous task. What the F70 does offer, is what Thinkware calls Front Vehicle Departure Warning, or FVDW. This monitors the vehicle in front when you are stationary, such as at a red light. If the vehicle ahead moves forward and you don’t, the camera will beep to let you know - handy if you’re not paying attention, and less embarrassing than being honked at by the car behind. As far as additional features go, the Thinkware F70 is quite a simple device. Again, it’s an entry-level product, so literally anything is a bonus. One thing that it does have up its sleeve though is a G sensor. This bit of tech helps the camera to identify impacts, and when that happens, it stores a recording of that moment in a separate folder. As you’d expect, this feature is operational when you’re driving about, but it also forms the basis of ‘parking mode’. As explained earlier, this is the camera’s dormant state which allows it to capture incidents upon impact when you’re away from the car. In its default settings though, there is a bit of a catch…

Next up is a low-energy parking mode. When you park up and leave the camera connected, it will switch to a mode that uses a third of the power of normal use, and only fires into life to record video when an impact is detected by the camera’s G-sensor.Once you’re able, it’s a good idea to position the camera high up and central on the inside of your car’s windscreen. That way, you’ll get the best footage, and the camera will cause the least amount of distraction. In fact, if you hide it behind the rearview mirror it won’t cause any distraction at all. This is especially true of the Thinkware F70 thanks to its slim, discreet design. When placing the mount, you might also want to take note of the fact that the F70’s lens is located to the side of the camera’s body. As such, if you want a perfectly central viewpoint, it may be worth offsetting the mount’s position a little. Connecting to power

Many dash cams offer a parking mode like this, and it’s a useful feature to have. Although it won’t capture events leading up to the impact, it will record straight after, potentially storing footage that could help you work out what happened, and capture the number plate of the guilty party. It’s always important to get a holistic view of what it’s like to own each dash cam that I test. For that reason, I’ll be taking you through the whole ownership process – installation, operation, and showing you what sort of image quality you can expect at both day and night. Along the way, I’ll point out the good and bad that you only get to see when handling the dash cam first-hand.SpacerThe versatile Thinkware M1 Motorsports Cam helps you capture all of your adrenaline-filled motorsports adventures.
